Hi I know this thread has been discussed on this forum before, and through this I am pretty certain that the problem is the master cylinder. My freelander is a Td4 2004. I have to day invested in a Haynes work shop manual and replacing it seems pretty straight forward. My only concern is it recommends bleeding the system afterwards. Now maybe I am miss reading the info on various forums but I got the impression that the master cylinder came with the fluid inside ready to go. Have I got the wrong end of the stick. because looking at the master on my vehicle I would say that you cant get into it. Someone told me that the brake reservoir serves both but I cant see how.

Well i picked up a new master cylinder on my travels today. Took a few hours off this after, and got stuck in. Three hours later I still wasn't able to separate the old master cylinder at the self sealer. Haynes say in the absence of the proper tool use a pair of long nosed pliers. I just couldn't separate the two parts. I have tried various tools even a pair of pipe grips. I n the end I gave up because I didn't want to cause damage to the slave cylinder side. I don't know what to do now. I may have to send the wife along to a garage to say some DIY bodger had a go and couldn't fix it I can envisage lots of tut tutting and head shaking.
