afternoon everyone, owning a k series freelander is a steep learning curve nest pas?i did the head gasket and saved myself £400 and it was quite easy, last week my clutch went so today i read the trusty haynes(yeah right)and as im decent with spanners albeit on motorbikes i decided to have a go myself......what a pain in the arse!if like me you dont have access to ramps i worked using axel stands and jacks, some of the ird bolts are hard to get to but ive got as far as just needing to undo gearbox to engine bolts andl/h side gearbox mounting and bobs your uncle i just need to lower gearbox off although i dont have a hoist and the gearbox is heavy so i will make do somehow (maybe rest on a jack and lower) .my clutch was slipping then the actuating arm completely seized so hopefully tommorow it will all become clear why anyway i will save myself the £450 i was quoted, just for new plate fitted. more awkward than owt else but do-able by d.i.y ers like me ,cheers mark

Mark take plenty of pics and post em up when yer done.

i might have to do mine before long, it's ok now though, and want to know what to expect.

Good Luck matey

I've used scissor jacks successfull for gearbox work before*, but you need to be ruddy careful they don't fall off one way or the other, two may be better and drop each end a little bit at a time ;)

If you are working on your drive, put a bit of ply or hardboard down, it not only catches the oil, but if the gear box does fall it will land on soft wood, not nasty concrete, les chance of a damaged casing that way.

*ordinary cars, not freelanders, I am and hope to remain a FL gear box mechanic virgin :)

I think my clutch is on way out! it changes smooth enough but when you press the pedal you hear a sound like a spring stretching.

Is this the actual clutch or is it a cable problem?

:scratching_chin:

If working under ramps is tricky, you could always try asking your local garages if they would rent you ramp space during downtime. I did it and they let me do whatever I wanted for £10 per hour and it made everything a thousand times easier.

Can't hurt to ask :).
