We Have A 1998 Xedi 5 Door Freelander Having Covered 96,000. Recently The Central Locking Has Gone A Bit "iffy".
The Remote Will Lock All Doors Etc As It Should, However When Beeping To Unlock It Will Open All The Doors Except The Driver's Door. This We Have To Unlock Manually.
This Occurs Everytime We Lock Via The Remote.
The Key Will Also Lock All The Doors.
Any Suggestions Greatly Appreciated

The rivers door will always unlock on the key as its connected to the latch via rods, unlock and lock are controlled by 2 wires in the loom, first check were the door opens were the check strap is pull out the rubber flex behind it is 2 connectors make sure they are not corroded, if still not working you will need to remove door panel and check the wiring for breaks as this does happen upto the latch i cant see it being the latch because the motor is working to lock, also make sure the sill button is not getting stuck in door panel causing it not to come up hope this helps.

i had exactly the same problem with my previous car renault laguna it was the solenoid in the drivers door of the central locking that cost me £120 for dealer to do.

 Conclusive proof that this is a brilliant site!!

My Freelander (1998 XEDi) has just started doing the same thing, yesterday in fact and I was starting to freak a bit as I know central locking probs usually cost the earth. Now I know it is most likely 1 of 3 possibilities and I can fix all of them myself, no prob.

I am one happy slippy!!

:(
Ok, not so happy. I checked my car this weekend, no wiring problems, all A ok. Solenoid is working properly as I can feel it move when I press the buttons so its not a motor prob. That means it is most likely something in the latch itself that is faulty so i need a new one of those. I must admit I am slightly confused as to how exactly you remove the latch itself when the nut to remove the external handle is a 13mm that is only accessable through a hole only large enough for a 10mm socket??

Ce la vie I guess

 The plot thickens ever more, went to Wales for weekend, now 2 weeks since my lock started to not work properly and suddenly it decided to work day after I got back???

My Land Rover has a sense of humour it seems, oh well, I'll wait for it to go wrong again and then I guess I'll swear at it until it starts working again!

again this is what happenened on my laguna central locking it hadn't worked for months on the drivers door then suddenly out of the blue it started to work it was ok for a couple of months before it started playing up again and then as i said before i had to have new solenoid in drivers door

Hi

try taking the door panel off and spraying the mechanism with some WD40 or similar. I had the same problem with my Range Rover now all is well.

ok - so i'm having the same problem. I can feel the soleniod move when i press the button but it isnt unlocking.

Did you get a new soleniod in the end?

I'm having the same problem as well, drivers door not unlocking with remote but locking with it.

I know the maplin soleniod has been mentioned, I'm just not sure how to wire it up, not sure what all 5 wires do , and have heard stories of people frying their central control unit when trying to fix wiring faults which knowing my luck would happen to me :)

Mine did the same at 98,000. Drivers door would lock, but not unlock. I dismantled the solenoid and lubricated the two motors and worm gears etc. It made no difference.

Popped to the dealer and bought a £64 new unit. Has worked perfectly to date (over 18 months).

Seems a common problem - have seen many freelanders like this!!

Steve

Am also having the same problem with passenger door on lhd freelander. Just suddenly stopped opening but does lock with remote. Will take apart door at weekend and advise what I find.

Hi Markw,
Am going to replace complete latch with solenoid that I can buy here in Land Rover for around £70. Bit extortionate as its an integral unit and solenoid is not available here separately. Bit of a fiddly job but not difficult.

Chris, you can get a central locking servo from Maplins (UK) for about £9 and can then adapt the latch mechanism to accept this. Its a bit fiddly bit not too bad and works a treat.

Me too. Had the same problem with rear passenger door on '99 2.0 XEDI, then front passenger door. It was intermittent for a while then failed completely in both cases. Bought new/replacement locks off ebay (Duckworths Landrover ebay site) just under £60 each delivered, replaced myself using the RAVE disc for guidance and all was fine. I'm a technical numpty but managed. Just took it slowly and swore a lot! ;)

I have a similar problem, can anyone help. The central locking locks all doors but only unlocks the divers door and the boot not the passenger door which has to be manually unlocked from inside...pulling on the internal handle makes the pin pop up and the door opens. When the central locking is used to unlock the car there is a whirring sound from the passenger door but the pin doesn't pop up.

Where do I start?
