Hello I have 2010 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE and for the last few weeks I have been experiencing problems with the steering intermittently. This has only happened on turning the wheel to the left at varying speeds. For a split second the steering goes stiff/appears to stop working, then I hear a clunking noise coming from somewhere under the dash/bonnet like something releases and then the steering returns to normal. I have taken it to one garage who could find no fault. It continued to happen so I took it to another garage who said I had a mixture of steering fluid so have drained it out and 2 days later it has happened again. I have now lost confidence in driving the car and so am not doing and it is booked to go back to the garage again on Thursday. Has anybody experienced anything like this please as the garage aren’t sure what is wrong with it? Thank you

You also need to change the PAS fluid reservoir as that's got the filter fixed in it. If it blocks it will put a strain on yer PAS pump.

There was a problems many years ago with left over weld spatter in the PAS system from manufacture which broke oft and caused trouble. It would block the filter.

It's strange that it's only got a problem turning left. Someone else had the same thing recently.

Thank you for your reply Hippo.

I have scrolled through other threads to try and find any similar problem but couldn’t.

I have no idea about anything technical to do with cars but don’t want to spend a fortune going back and forth to the garage for them to keep trying different things and the cost is mounting up and the problem is still there.

Ask the garage to replace the PAS fluid reservoir & also make sure they are using the right fluid which should be green, that is unless they changed it for the 2010? get them to check the steering pinion also as corrosion can take place and a leak can occur through pin holes, thus losing fluid which in turn affects the steering.

Hello..... Did you manage to get your steering problem sorted? What was it?
I have the same problem and the garage can’t find anything wrong!

I believe the first thing to do with FL2 steering issues is to replace the reservoir. There's an integral filter can clog up. Replace the fluid once the new reservoir is installed, and see how it goes from there.

Hello there was a problem with the steering rack I think with something catching. I paid £700 and had a new steering rack put in and it solved the problem. When it was stationary and you pulled the steering wheel to the left you could hear it making the clunking sounds

My Fl2 is a 2009 and I have experienced the same problems as yourself, it will steadily progress until you don't want to drive the vehicle anymore, as you've been advised already, I did change the reservoir (going for the least expensive solution) which did have a blocked gauze this gave only a marginal difference, my next port of call was a new steering pump...this did help greatly but still not right...I trawled thru the forums and ebay and found an advert from WPS of Bristol who described my fault to a tee step by step to the final collapse of the rack, it would seem that the FL2 rack is a take-off of the Ford Mk4 Mondeo rack which had an inferior pinion fitted in some, when they break up the swarf and filings go thru the reservoir filter, block it starving the pump of fluid and lack of pressure aiding the destruction of the steering rack.
My final solution was to order a new re-manufactured steering rack from WPS which including the VAT is £250 delivered to me...that price is exchange unit and the return price is included in the initial price. I am now convinced that I didn't require fitting a new pump and should have done my homework first and saved a right few pounds...
I am sure that you have the exact same problem as me and the answer is a rebuilt rack from WPS
Phone WPS and speak to Mick or go on their website. (0117 960 29060)
Enjoy your FL2 the best land rover ever built.

Hi BigAl.
Interesting post please report back after a few months 3/6 and let us know how you get on, the change of the reservoir is/was a good move these really need checking every 3 yrs in my opinion.
Do you have a link for their website.
