I liked them but they have no drop down rear window for the dog and no spare wheel on the back.
 
Freelanders 2's are nice. :)

Spare wheel in the boot is something I like the idea of.

Can we have some pic's of what's under the bonnet and the haldex rear diff thing?
 
I prefer a lower boot for me dog to get in and out easier myself. Spare wheel on the back is also good an a mechanical reversing distance aid in a tight spot :)

With the ever growing size and weight of wheels it's probably no bad thing that all that bulk and weight has moved down low going some way to moving the C of G down with it.

Can we have some pic's of the engine bay from different sides/angles to see the layout. Also a pic of the haldex rear diff thing (showing it mounted in the subframe) like below but not as close. A pic of the prop connection to the front transfer box would be nice, as below but not as close, so we can see what the access is like at the rear of the engine.

Having swapped a few wheels on FL2's, I really believe that there are lots of practical reasons not to mount a spare wheel up so high now. With a 235/55 R19 wheel and tyre combination (which is bl**dy heavy!), lifting to and from the height of the rear door isn't something I'd fancy doing if I was stuck with a puncture with no one to help

I suppose it's not a huge surprise really. Here's one Ford put into a Mondeo earlier:

What is odd the first time you see it is just how low down the engine is in the engine bay - low C of G I suppose and maybe as a consequence of platform sharing, but there's enough room to leave a medium sized suitcase between the top of the engine and the underside of the bonnet.

Either way, it's a darned good engine except for its thirst as a 190bhp auto. It seems to be right up their with Oliver Reed....

The fl1 engine is very low as well!
It was the expansion/header tank that struck me as most ford like! Along with the top of the dipstick.... I need to get out more!
 
The v6 fills the engine bay more in the FL1 than the 1.8 etc do.

I have to admit I like the look of the FL2 engine bay. It's neat and looks like easy access to stuff when the big pipe at the top and the engine cover are removed. Thanks fer the pic's. What's the mpg like on the SD4? I assume the gearbox is on the side of the engine and not at the rear of the engine?

As Freelance said, the gearbox is end on.

Fuel consumption is a little higher for me than many, as the nearest motorway is around 70 miles away and there are a lot of hills here. But, doing around 30,000 miles a year AND paying for my own fuel, it's a major consideration.

On a long (mostly dual carriageway) journey, keeping to the legal limit and taking it very easy with a constantly warm engine, I might get 36mpg.

A typical return journey, of around 58 miles, to my office in Plymouth which is 10% lanes, 40% A roads and 50% dual carriageway will (if I stick to the speed limits) return around 31 mpg.

If I drive around the lanes and through the villages, avoiding short journeys and driving sensibly, it's around 27-28mpg.

Getting in stop start traffic, or doing short journeys of around 5-10 miles, will see consumption dip to around 22-25mpg :eek: Fortunately, those sorts of journeys make up very little of my mileage :rolleyes:

Overall, these are the sorts of figures I would have expected if I'd gone for a Disco 4 instead.

The figures are around 4-5mpg less than I have got from either of my previous TD4 manuals over the last 110,000 miles.
 
That all sounds good to me. Local mpg is 18mpg and motorway is 27 to 28 at a steady 60mph, in ma v6. It drinks fool like it's free. I would like to have an SD4 but only if ma hippo is no longer feasible to repair cost wise, or is deaded. It just a shame they're going to stop producing them. I think the FL2 should continue. Sales are still strong. I likes blue and red ones. :)
