Hi hope you folks can help
I have a 2008 auto tdi freelander 2 and it runs fine but every now and then ..very rare ...it just cuts out .
If I sit there a minute ..pull my key out and then lock and unlock
And put my key back innit starts ...
And again runs fine for ages
Someone said it may be a immobilizer sensor ?and that it’s a fortune and can only be done by Land Rover?
Any ideas?

Doubt its the imobiliser, that should stop an engine from starting, but would not kill it once it is running I don't think.

Best bet would be to get diagnostic codes read. You could try the engine ECU with a standard ODBII dongle, but I imagine you may be looking for a more thourough diag that looks at more systems.

What comes up on the LCD information panel?
Does the MIL come on?
Have you read the engine code log?

We have exactly the same problem. Very worried should it occur on a smart motorway with no hard shoulder! This has happened twice since new throttle body fitted. Sudden engine dying with no warning. Will not restart. Necessary to turn off ignition before restarts and runs as normal.

Any advice very welcome!

What comes up on the dash when it cuts out?

First off you need to get the codes read.

Random cutting out is difficult to identify though, so you are restricted to either graphing the outputs of key sensors like the crank position sensor, fuel rail sensor or simply replacing them one at a time, to see if it helps.

thanks, stopping in the middle of the road blocking traffic behind I was not quick enough to photograph the dashboard. My memory is that many symbols and lights were on. The left hand light of the horizontal strip of lights at the bottom centre of the panel was definitely on.
We will get the codes read by the garage next week. This has never happened until about a week ago. A month ago we had a lack of turbo problem and the garage replaced the throttle body. I wonder if there is a software incompatibility between older engine and the newer throttle body?
