I have a freelander 2 and an awful droning noise coming from the rear of the vehicle when travelling about 30mph which I hope is a wheel bearing. Having said this since noticing the noise I am hearing things that could have always been there and I have just never bothered to listen or these noises are also new.

It’s hard to explain but when accelerating there are three noises, the engine itself as speed increases, the turbo as speed increases (Freelander 2 Sport LE SD4 auto 2179cc) and a third noise which I don’t know whether or not it is supposed to be there. When accelerating it is almost like a second (but louder) turbo kind of hissing noise but it is rather loud! I’ve not been in another freelander 2 unfortunately so can’t compare it to another vehicle. The noise calms down similarly to the quiter turbo noise when I stop accelerating.

Could just be me being silly but rather ask here before taking it into a garage to listen/sort the wheel bearing out! I’m just hoping the noises aren’t linked is all.

If it's a pre-2009, then there is an issue that affects the rear diff. Essentially it's made of cheese, so failures are common. This was rectified after 2009 ish models and most early failures would also be sorted by now.

When was the Haldex fluid last changed? It's an important job which should be done at 20K miles intervals IIRC.

They strengthened the rear diff bearing and changed to the gen 4 haldex after a few years but unfortunately the failure rates fer both were still higher than it should have been. It must have cost lr a small fortune for all the warranty returns.
