Hi there

I am hoping someone can help/confirm my suspicions.....I have just purchased my second Freelander 2 HSE Luxury SD4. Now it's still under a dealer warranty and I have noticed there is a humming drone from the offside at low speed (particularly when on slightly bumpy ground). I took back to the deal who advised that it was the exhaust hanger wearing and they are going to fit a replacement part - but I am not convinced. Its certainly not a clonking noise like the exhaust is hitting the underside.....more a sporadic rubbing hum. I am sure the rear diff is on its way out and perhaps the haledex pump? Any thoughts please? It has 61000 miles on the clock. Hate it when these places talk to me like I know nothing!!! Thank you!

The exhaust hangers are really tough polyurethane type material, so are unlikely to fail, and really unlikely to create a humming noise anyway.

How many miles are on it?

These are know for rear diff failure, even on the later ones, so that would be my first guess.

It has 61000miles on it. Frustratingly not a sound on test drive. 20 miles after getting home and humming starts. I will continue to annoy the dealership until it’s rectified. Thank you!

My mew to me 2008 FL2 makes more noise from the rear diff area after its driven up a hill, but quietens down again once I've travelled a mile or so from the top.

I'm putting this down to the oil needing to be changed, which of course can't do any harm as I bet its not been done.

Maybe yours is in need of an oil change too?

Possibly, I’m not excluding anything now! So my list is Rear Diff and potential oil change in h.pump. Would help if they returned my calls! I had a 2008 one, never had a single problem with it in the time I owned it, best cars ever x

Keep on until it is repaired, sounds like you have a good knowledge of the vehicle.
Don't forget, if you get near the end of the warrantee and it is still not fixed, get a letter confirming that it will be resolved as it started within warrantee.

Stay with it, well done so far!

Thanks Nodge68, appreciate!

Well all, transpires the rear diff had completely locked (?!) and even when removed the technician couldn’t move it tools. So, fortunately whilst under 6 month warranty, a new Diff, service of Haldex pump, filter and oil change. Took two weeks for the work to be completed though...... thanks again for all of your comments x
