might not the hill decenter switch. When did you last replace brake light switch. If not you can check by sticking a short broom handle between seat and pedal. Or have some look when you press with keys in the ignition on.

Interesting that it is just HDC lamp - usually it is joined by its two friends, ABS and TC... so if only HDC, then that helps narrow your investigations somewhat :)

I have experienced the 3lights(3 amigos) coming on about 5yrs ago. This is the first time I have had just the HDC showing. I have
changed the brake switch, checked the hdc switch and wiring, checked bulbs and lights, tried the hill descent down a hill but all without any success.
Hence the reason for the request for the diagnostic test.

Brake switch would have had all three of our old friends lit bright? That this is only HDC limits the number of things it could be. It won’t be a wheel speed sensor for example.

Might be a gear position sensor (1st/reverse) or the hdc switch. But you’re right, the diagnostic tester should help narrow things down further... :)

If you want to have a go at running this lone Amigo out of town without reading the codes, you've got a better chance than normal, cos 1 light, as @rob_bell say, narrows down the possibilities. You could download the Rave workshop manual which gives a list of reasons for the different warning light combinations...

If there's nobody near you with a reader, just pop into a local Landie (indie) garage and get the codes read, shouldn't cost you much. That's what I do.

FYI, there's a thing on here that if there's no pics it doesn't exist or didn't appen. We know you're shy, cos it took you over 6 years to write your 1st post (further proof L Series are the bestest and most reliable engines?) but a pic of the car is customary. Actually that last bit is made up, but you can never have to many pics of L Series Freelanders.

You wouldn't. They're as slow as a slow thing.;)
Wrong, they are very likable & Right, they are slow :)

If I'm honest, they are a PITA pulling away at lights - as you say slow as a slow thing. Overall though, I do love it. Open road driving is pleasurable and in slow moving traffic it doesn't matter how fast your car is. The South Island here is about the size of England and we have about 10 miles of motorway. So virtually all my driving is on the equivalent of British B and 4 digit A roads. The L Series is fine on them and if I need to overtake a car (or 5), I drop a gear and leave them in a cloud of soot.

Performance is only 1 aspect. For reliability it can't be beaten, I've always got between 35 and 43mpg out of it, it sounds awesome and I just love owning my old British diesel :)

Thanks rob-bell-can anyone describe where and how easy it is to locate the gear position sensor. Cheers GrumpyGel, I will try to download the manual.

I can see the gear position sensor functions on the diagnostic - I've not had the need to look to see where the microswitches are located - may be on the gear selector mechanism? I don't think they'll be on the PG1 gearbox?

Thanks. I contacted the parts dept of my local L.R. dealership and they could not locate the sensor.
