Freelander 1800 k series cutting out

I have a 1999 freelander with the 1800cc k series engine, the car has done 84,000 faultless miles ( guess im luck ) .. Just recently a problem has developed..
The engine just cuts out and dies as if it has run out of petrol, once it has ground to a hault i wait for 5-10 seconds, turn the key she instantly fires up and away i go.. the problem is that it does it so erraticly, i done a 120 mile journey in it, for the first 100 miles it was fine, but in the last 20 miles it broke down 20-30 times.

Since then the car has been fine i use it regularly each day for work and it doesnt miss a beat

Today i serviced the car, oil and filters plugs/leads/cap and rotor .. i thought this might have been the problem as i have not serviced it for a while, yet on 3 mile journey home it died 3 times ( i havent changed the fuel filter as i couldnt find it... thats the last thing i have to eliminate, other than that i have no ideas...

Fuel filter.

The fuel filter is actually inside the fuel pump. If you've got a haynes manual it will tell you how to change it in there. It's an easy job, here's a recent thread telling you how to remove.
