Hello

Hope someone can help, just drove back home and clutch is making a wierd whine only when releasing the clutch pedal ? .......... does this mean i need a new clutch etc :(......

I have just been told by an Auto Mechanic my car has a Solid Fly Wheel ?? so it wont need to be replaced ? and they have Quoted £525 + VAT for a 2 Piece Clutch kit by AP Concentric slave cu;inger and gearbox fluid and labour ? is that a good price ?

Can anyone recommend anyone in the Bedfordshire Area or someone mobile ?

I dont want to scrap the car but after some quick quotes online looks like i might need too :(

Hope someone can help

Thanks in advance.

Knowing what vehicle it is would be helpful.
If it's a TD4 FL1, then the factory flywheel is a duel mass unit, however they normally have a long life, so replacement isn't always necessary with the clutch.

As for the clutch itself, you'll need 3 parts, the cover, the plate and the concentric.

£525+ VAT sounds a bit expensive. The clutch should take about 5 hours to replace with the proper lifting equipment. The price of the clutch varies, but a LUK clutch is about £180 for all 3 parts.
Fluids are cheap, maybe £15 tops.

Hello

Thankyou for your reply sorry it’s a Freelander 1 L Series V177 HKX I have double checked with the garage who gave me this quote and they still say it’s a solid flywheel and won’t need changing, I just don’t want to spend the expense only to be told later ‘oh you need a flywheel aswell’

How can I check ? To make sure they are telling me the right things.

thx again

Its not "just" an L Series... its an L Series ;)

Yeh, L Series is a solid flywheel, the clutches are cheaper than a TD4 one - when I've looked over here they have been about the price Nodge quoted above for a TD4, so I recon they'd be cheaper than that in the UK. However, its the labour cost that is the big bit.

I've never changed the clutch - don't know how long it would take, but I imagine what Nodge says is right for L Series as well as you have the same gearbox and IRD gubbings to separate.

The hydraulics are a lot simpler on the L Series though and need not be replaced (unless its faulty), it can be done at any time easily without dismantling to access the insides of the bell housing.

I would get a couple of quotes. If your happy to drive it and think it'll make it Freelander Specialists near Thetford are probably worth a call. http://www.freelanderspecialist.com/

They're probably worth a call just to see what price you should be looking at.

However, are you sure it is the clutch? What sort of mileage is the car on and has the clutch been replaced previously? What goes more frequently is the hydraulics. However, this manifests itself in it getting hard to engage gears, and often a simple fracture of the bracket and the clutch doesn't work at all. It would be real bad if you replaced the clutch to find its the gearbox or summat. The hydraulics normally go because the arm it presses on the engage/release the clutch siezes up - it should really have a couple of drops of oil dripped onto it where it goes through the bell housing at each service.

As I say, I don't know a lot about changing the clutch, people like Nodge know a lot more.

This is the clutch you'll need...

There's various suppliers ranging from Britpart (possibly dodgy) through the Genuine LR (a rip off) - I see NZ prices, but I'd go for the Borg & Beck at $227.29 - but that's only cos I've used one before in a tomcat and it worked! OEM (what they list as Branded Original Equipment presumably) are usually the ones I go for if I have a choice of dodgy or rip off Genuine.

hi thanks very much for the reply.

Its done 70K miles so low milege for its age, as far as im aware the clutch hasnt been replaced.

Unfortuantly im not mechanically minded, all i know it still changes gears ok althou reverse sometimes crunches but its done that since ive had it which is over a year.

Its just today when driving home everytime i changed gear and took my foot off the clutch is made this loud kinda whine noise when the clutch pedal was comming up. ?????

no it’s not a TD4 just a standard 2L L Series Engine
Ah that's a different ball game, but I was confused because you said this.

The L series PG1 gearbox doesn't have a concentric slave, but an external slave and release fork assembly instead.
No it doesn't have a DMF, but as GG said above, the clutch for the L series is cheaper than the TD4 clutch by quite a margin.

When was the gearbox oil level last checked?
Noise with the pedal released suggests a gearbox input bearing issue, not a clutch issue.

gearbox :( that sounds worse and more expensive :( and i dont think the gearbox oil level has ever been checked

Just drove it again for a few minutes to check, and thier is defently a burning smell comming from rear of engine aswell

My L Series has done about 150k miles. Still on original clutch and I've given it a fair bit of punishment towing etc. I did replace the hydraulics last year when the bracket holding the slave cracked.

Mine needs a good push through the carpet on the clutch if its not to grind going into reverse - like yours always done it and I've had mine 12 years or so. I think its a characteristic of the PG1 gearbox.

The engine, clutch and gearbox setup is the same used in a lot of Rover cars of that era - so there should be garages familiar with it. However, the Freelander has 4wd bits bolted on that does complicate things when doing things like changing the clutch.

Good luck with it. They are exceedingly reliable cars. I've had very little trouble in the 12 years I've had mine. If its still running 4wd, once you've got it sorted, have a read of this thread to reduce your likelyhood of other problems...

Yeh, 2nd hand replacements are not expensive, for example this outfit is selling the PG1 for £125...

https://www.gentlemenofsalvage.co.u...-k-series-1998-to-2007?variant=39847585022012

However, that is for a K Series, they also have TD4 boxes for £150-£240. L Series boxes are different to the K Series, stronger and different ratios, however, they are not as common.

The parts to repair the PG1 are probably quite cheap, when my IRD broke, a complete reconditioning kit with 8 bearings, seal and cooler, was only £125 - so if it is just 1 bearing it should be cheap, but once again, it is the time/labour that will be costly.

If I were in your position of not knowing if it was the gearbox or clutch, I would get both and fit them myself - then maybe look to get my old PG1 repaired and sold or kept as backup in case the 2nd hand one isn't in great condition. I'm no ninja with the spanners, just someone who gets enjoyment from maintaining my car and wanting the work done properly.

If you are going to have the work done for you, than definitely try and find someone who knows something about the car and will give you prices - eg try those Freelander Specialist people.

Hi Guys just an update i spoke to a freelander specialist and they have quoted over £1,000 to get this sorted and it could be more :( its something thats not feasible with this car..... so unfortuantly it looks like it will have to go to the scrapyard in the sky :( but i apprecaite you comments and help....... another L Series bites the dust

That's steep!

Seems a shame for an otherwise decent enough motor to be scrapped for that.

Wish I was still in London, I'd have it off you.

Yeah i know, unfortunatly im usless with cars, so rely on a mechanic / garage and had a few quotes and all say the same thing, to be honest i just dont think they can be bothered by thier attitude :(

They're having you on, it would be half that cost to repair.

Nooo.
Sell it as spares or repair.
You'll get more than the scrap value, especially as the L series is well sort after.
There are plenty of people who would buy it from you and fix it for a couple of hundred quid, then use it. ;)
