I have to ask the burning question.:confused:

I am thinking about buying a 2000 1.8 Freelander(had engine change about 15K miles ago) Am I mad?

If I go ahead and buy it,is there a mod that can be made to help prevent HGF?

Yes, luckily the 100% mod to prevent HGF is called trading it in for a Defender.
 
Yu are mad.
Sequential HGF is very common. Only buy one if yu have lots if time and lots of money.

But yes yu can fit the new head gasket, new oil rail, fit the remote thermostat, an EWP and modify the cooling system to take the later expansion bottle and become a catholic.

Well this wasnt what I wanted to here. I just bought a y reg 1.8 es for £500 with 77 000, its going to cost £500 to get it on the road and then £300-£500 to get all the wee things fixed, like the 3 amegos. Then i was going to keep it for 6 month to a year and sell it and get a disco. Sounds to me like I should bin it and run away and keep the crapy focus. Should I sell up as soon as pos? the head was done at 50 000, but i dont think with any mods. :confused::doh::Cry:
 
You just bought a Freebie for £500 - did you expect a brand new, fault-free motor or something? If you spent that much on a Disco would you start moaning it was rusty?

If you spend pennies and don't do the checks or get a warranty then don't start whingeing about it. This place has a lot of good advice about Freebies that will help you save a lot of cash getting it sorted.
 
If you read my post properly im not expecting a new car and I have been doing alot of work myself after reading struff on this site, but when I had seen in the histery that the head had been re done only 25000 ago and the fact that I only do about 4000-6000 a year that the head would be reasonably save.
I do see this car as a project but after reading this it seems no matter what you do with this engine its never safe and reliable.
 
Forums like this detail problems so that others can fix them. Stuff like this in detail helps folks to pinpoint problems and not get told porkies by some arsehat spanner monkey who doesn't know the first thing about these mills. It doesn't mean your motor is shagged. Go and look at a VW forum and read some of their tales and how they get treated by dealers. Or the Focus for that matter, yet your's is okay? Any car is utter ****e if you go look round.

If this place only had posts from owners saying their motor was fine and working it would be a bit useless, no? Just 'cos they're not on here don't mean they don't exist. My Freebie is fine, has been for years*, my old MGF is fine, has been for years, my ZT is fine, has been for years. And becuase of that I don't run round sayin' so.

*The VCU might be on the way out...........
 
I agree with what your saying but from what I have read on the forum the 1.8 is alot more unreliable than the other engine in the freelander and prob over the hole land rover fleet. I still have my project freelander that I was going to get on the road as the main family moter but I maybe better off selling it once its on the road and getting tdi freelander or disco.
 
Hi Mr Madmax, you may have a point, although if you're happy with spannering then buying a new MLS gasket, steel dowels, oil rail and remote thermostat should cost about £200 and a few hours of work and mean that you don't need to worry about the head gasket too much. You would also have to consider a new VCU which only lasts for 70K miles or so and if you replace the rear bushes and fix all of the small niggles like windows, ABS and things you'd have a pretty reliable car. I'm not too sure about the economics of this but it strikes me that you could have a good car for £1500 which seems pretty good to me.
 
Well the car past its mot but then blow a power steering pipe so back off the road, Im enjoying working on the car can with this site it makes it more possible to fix it myself, but on a hole its up to the wife, she hasnt driven it yet so it will be up to her. We will be keeping it till the summer anyway as that will give me time to fix all the wee things.

The novity will soon wear of matey :D especialywhen it starts braking down when the wife is out init, that never goes down well :D :D

Im sure you will end up being right and she will blame me for it as norm, but I want a disco and this baby 4x4 is a nice size for her to get use to before the move to a big 4x4, if im aloud;)
