I just spoke to a garage who claim they are getting discos from a main dealer. But they have no service history and told me i could get it from Landrover. The price is pretty good but alarm bells are ringing?

How would you get the 'service history' from LR, there is as far as I know NO central service record system, each dealer has it's own database, but I doubt they would let you have any info as it would give info on owners etc (data protection act etc)

I would be suspicious !!!

Just for your info, when I bought my Disco recently it had been looked after for 6-7 yrs by the same LR main dealer and when I contacted them they gave me a breakdown of what servicing had been done, inc cambelt change, gearbox oil changes etc.

No personal info, just what they had done to the car.

Ok, I stand corrected then . . . .

But my LR dealer wouldn't even give me a copy of the service sheets, saying "we have stamped your log book, and that's all we give you as a record"

Obviously the 'friendliness' of LR dealers varies a lot !!!!

If the price is good and it is in good/excellent condition including mechanical condition - see if the garage will service it before you buy it and then keep a record from there on. Condition is much more important then service history IMO.

True, Mine had the 1st & 2nd service at LR dealer (then the mortgage ran out) the 4th, 5th at a local 'smaller' garage and by me since 48k miles (it's now clocked 97k and runs like a dream, no oil leaks (yep, I said NO leaks, no smoke, and regulary gives 30+ mpg

So condition and tlc is worth far more than any service book (also IMO)

its also not unknown fer dealers to stamp em up without actually have done the work. I know of one car that was on a lease and never seen the dealer for a service during the whole lease period. but when it was on the forecourt after the lease expired it had a complete service history.

Me too.
I was given a print out of all work done following the end of the LR warranty period.
Good enough for me.

Maybe it's just me, but I have a built in distrust of car main dealers (I'm sure the're many that are very reputable) but I just think they're complete rip offs

Example local LR main dealership who shall remain unamed will charge £110/hr to work on a Disco, but charges £150/hr for RR's - how is that justified ?

And I put service records in teh same leauge, I know of one dealer who was charging for top quality oil (castrol GTX for example), but fill with a commercial grade (comma or similar) . . and before anyone says, yes I did report to the DTi and the OFT

It's not just you Steve, why do so many of us do our own servicing and repairs - to save money for sure, but also for me it's about knowing for certain, what's been done to my vehicle - and I enjoy it too !!!

EXACTLY what I was saying - I trust my own work, and it's also the little things - like wiping off oil splashes after doing a change and general cleaning up. :)

In my mind NO 'employed' mechanic is going to pay attention to little details, at the end of the day 'It's NOT their vehicle' . . .why on earth would they care THAT much, as long as they get the work done within the schedule times :( :(

I'll keep doing my own servicing and repairs as long as I can
