Well this Cant be Right.
Put new flange and seal in place, there was very little play when nut was hand tightened, started to tighten with 32 ml socket and it only took a couple of turns before no play, On third photo with flange in place I can turn it by hand and both shafts turn with it, but another half turn on the nut and it will not budge by hand, Now this is not tight At All, I Did not try to tighten any further until I find out what the hell I am doing wrong.

once your rid of the play if you go too further you crush the spacer and you cant back off as spacer stays crushed, but nut should be tight to turn even before play is removed, nut is bloody tight to turn or should be

When I first took it off it was Very Tight took some moving, But where it is now in photo is no where near infact I could loosen it without putting bar in to hold still.

nut should be tight to turn even before plays taken up ,try the old nut
Will try it tomorrow Mate and let you know. Thanks for your help.
Just my Luck this nothing seems to go right for me even after doing every thing I've been told and reading up on things.
Anyway suppose its part of learning.o_O

its the same for us all

Well I can get quite a few more turns on the old nut but still don't think it is tight enough. I can turn by hand but when I go any tighter it just locks up.
When I first slide the flange on without nut there is play but very little.
There is a gap between big flat washer and seal, should the seal be further in ? that's as far as I can get it.

Looks like the dirve flange has left a line right round the seal/washer this could be whats causing things to lock up.

Noticed that Mate, how would that cause it to Lock ? Is there a solution ? Thsnks
As your tightening it up you've said that everything is locking up it looks to me with the witness mark on the seal that the flange is tightening on to the seal. Did you compare the old flange to the new are the both the same length? I know on rover diffs older ones where shorter and had a seperate spacer but land rover changed the design and lengthened the flange to make it one piece.

Can't upload pics as at work but here if you search STC3433 and STC4858 you will see that STC4858 is longer.

I got the bits separate the flange is 607185 superceded to STC4457, They look exactly the same size, will have a go at putting the old one back on.

Well Solved the problem, It was Obvious, Not to Yous as you could not see it but to me as I was practically staring at it all the while, Im Sorry for been so Stupid AGAIN, never mind you learn from your mistakes I suppose.
Anyway there it is right there in photo 1 I did not have a special tool but after realizing I used something thinner which held it in place to get it tight. photo 2

I think tightened it up enough, there is no play and I can rotate by hand, although it does seem stiffer then before with old one. What would happen if I went to far and hit the Collapsible spacer ?. I've got Videos of before and after but cant upload them, anyone know how to do this??

you are supposed to reach the spacer but because its already crushed if you crush it much more bearings would have too much preload and wear quick

Thanks so its basically a guessing game for me, I did get it really tight like it was before. will try and get someone to check it for me, that's if they can tell by Feel.
Will try and get videos on later.

is it not too difficult to turn by hand, and just a little stiffer than previous, not forgetting a new seal adds some drag
