2013 FL2 noise coming from Transfer Box diagnosed by LR dealer in Northeast England who quoted 2k to change it .

Was intouch with Freelander Specialist in Norfolk who advised they could fit an upgraded one with connecting sleeve and seal to auto box for 1.6k with a 2 year warranty.
Drove down Tuesday afternoon and dropped off LR and collected 1630 following afternoon with re con box fitted at stated price with 2 year warranty .
LR only offer 1 year warranty.

Drove the vehicle back that night and it was so quiet and smooth.
Just been speaking to them today to try and find what caused box to fail and after telling them my tyre history they told me probably mis matched tyre sizes .
Had 4 matching good condition tyers on and hit a lump of concrete on A1 causing one tyre on offside to blow out and one to badly blisster .Changed for spare and drove home slowly.Changed the 2 tyres for new on offside and older ones left on nearside .

Freelander specialists claim main cause of box failure is mismatched tyrers.Hard to believe really but there it is .Now looking for new tyres .
Would recomend Freelander Specialist if you need work or help.I have found them very good

I know nothing about Freelander specialists, but £1630 for a PTU is very expensive, compared to Bell Engineering, who are the top Freelander transmission specialists.

It's unlikely to be the tyres, as the PTU, rear diff and Haldex are all weak points on these vehicles, often failing about 50k miles or so.

I've always replaced all 4 tyres at the same time on my FL2. Currently running on Yokohama Geolander CV G058 tyres at less than £100 corner; shop around.
I chose these tyres because I had been experiencing uneven tyre wear and was damned if I was going to fit premium tyres until I was confident the tracking was sorted out.
Had a full 4WD allignment carried out, and a couple of thousand miles later everything looks okay.

I spoke with Bell and explained the problem and he said " does not sound like transfer box so there is nothing I can do for you "

It's difficult to diagnose an issue over the phone, but I'd like to see how a Freelander specialist can charge over £1600 for a reconditioned part which sells for about £500, even if factoring in 2 or 3 hours labour.
Something seems off to me.

I do remember a firm with a similar name that had a very bad reputation for selling poor quality reconditioned transmission parts at inflated prices, but there's no guarantee it's the same people, although the price is very steep compared to Bell.

Its a 4 hour job to change the tranfer box
The price from Freelander Specialist includes recon box with better bearings and crown wheel and new sleeve and seal between transfer box and auto gear box .Comes with a written 2 year warranty .
