Over the last few days I noticed twice that when putting the car in Drive after starting it, the gearbox does not seem to want to select a gear and is if the car is in neutral. Moving the gear leaver out of Drive and back into Drive again and all is right again.

Other than this issue, no problems with the gearbox. Only the issue with selecting Drive. I am not sure if it might just be that I did not put is 100% in position or if there an issue lurking with the autobox and selecting Drive.

If this get's worse, what should I look out for or what might be the cause?

It's possible that the selector cable has stretched over time. Does the dash display and selector light show D in the notched position of the selector. Does that make sense?

The selector light and dash display both showed D when it happened. I will keep monitoring it. Only happened twice so will see what happens over the coming weeks. Not sure if it has something to do with the temperature drop here in South Africa as we are entering our winter.

Try putting it in 4 selector option if D fails. If the selector set-up is a bit out 4 should make it go forward, as a test.

Did a couple of trips in town this afternoon and it did do it again. Will keep an eye on it. Don't think it is anything serious at the moment.

It's happened to me on a couple of occasions since August last year.

My previous car, a Yeti DSG CR140 with a remapped engine and a flappy paddle steering wheel occasionally lost drive when using the paddles to change down a gear. Maybe 6 times over 41,000 miles. It was always a surprise when it happened, you change down apply the gas and ....... lots of noise and no go. Yeti's are not fitted with flappy paddles, but the Octavia and Superb are, they are just plug and play.
