Disco 2 Fixing cup holder. Is this the way it works?

Hi there. I have just taken out my cup holder out of the dash as it was jammed closed. To cut a long story short I have reassembled it and it seems to be working. Push it in and it holds shut, push it again and it pops out (kind off). This is where I have the question. I would have expected the cup holder to eject fully enough that it drops the under tray section down. Mine pops out however I have to give it a little pull to make it functional. Is this truly the way it works?

Should fully open when working correctly, many years ago when a mates one was replaced he had to windup one of the cogs that was spring loaded before engaging the holder in a track, he did it after a few attempts and I looked on, but it was frustrating, so it was down to the pub afterwards.

Mine works like yours - needs a little pull at the end to fully deploy.
It's never occurred to me that it's not quite right. It's not top of the list of things I need to sort out.

My car is disabled again by a leaky front axle oil seal and hence having to fix little jobs like this. Thanks for the reply. I am going to try and grease the plastic mechanism to see if that helps a little.
