I managed to part undo the 4 bolts holding a standard bumper to my 90. Then like every thing else I touch they have seized solid. WD40, oil soaked on them. I know that the 2 bolts go into a 'tapping block' plate that is drawn up to secure it.
I will go back to it this weekend armed with a scaffold bar and a grinder. My concern is..... if the bolts snap or I grind the heads of the nuts is there enough space for them to drop through? I have visions of the remaining studs and the loose tapping block not falling through far enough for me to get the bumper off.

Any previous experience of this problem would be really assist:doh: I wont be back on till Saturday:)

I soaked mine with wd40 and left them for a day after I had problems getting them out. They came about 10 or 15 mm and were solid after that but the next day after Id oiled them and a little more determination I got them out. They are a fairly strong bolt it would take a lot of pressure to shear them I think.

Best way = loads of wd40, fookin big bar, n patience if you grind the heads off then you will NOT get them out at all.

If you have access to oxy-accetelene then you could try gently warming the threaded end.

Like said before about wd (ah use gt85), but retighten them a little and give it a good soakin'. Mines were like that when ah changed me bumper ages ago, just had to be patient. If possible, try and get new bolts.. if not then give them a really good clean and some copper grease so they're easier comin' out the next time;):D

THank you all for the advice.... I got some GT85 and gave the bolts a good splash. I then tried to tighten them up again... 1 snapped but not a problem. I then undid the remaining 3 with a spanner and a bar till it felt really tight, then rather than force them, I just kept moving the bolt back and forth a few times to give the GT85 a chance to work in... took a while but got the 3 other bolts out. Took the bumper off.
I found that by fishing the broken bolt and fastener with a finger I managed to get the thread of the bolt to poke out through a cut out at the front of the chasis.... I was able to wedge it with a large srewdriver and hacksawed the bolt off in a few minutes. I then was able to get the retainer out.
I am no expert but trust me... the bolts would not move, Had I cut the heads off the bolts they would have not dropped down enough to get the bumper off.
As advised I took my time... that GT85 is excellent stuff. Thanks to the advice I have my A bar fitted (needed a little packing out to marry up with the raised weld on the bumper) :) many thanks.

Old thread revival... I'm doing the exact same, i.e. fitting an A-bar and a new bumper. Got the old bumper off alright, but the captive threaded plates for some reason or another are actually welded onto the inside of my old bumper??? And the new one isn't supplied with any... so, I thought about just putting new washers/nuts in underneath but access is extremely difficult.

Someone must have had this problem before, any ideas? :D

Nice one cheers Grim, that may have to be my last resort... :D but I wonder if there is a way to do it without buying those things? I thought about trying to weld some washers and nuts where the plate should be, but my welding is ****e and my welder appears to have stopped working :(

Is it really worth the hassle though when you can buy the right bit for a few quid:confused::confused::confused::confused: I'm no eggspurt, but I know what I'd be doing;);););)

Yeah spose so :( I just wanted to get it on today is all, it looks so good! :D

Gonna try ringing the main stealer  to see if they have any by chance

Reviving a very old thread but how do u get these old captive nuts out??? Any help appreciated. Managed to get the bolts out somehow just can't get these old crusty captive nuts out. Cheers.

I had the same issue a while ago. 3 bolts undid no problem - 4 bolt would not budge. Tried everything. Ended up cutting the top off and bending the bumper down as much as i could and cutting the bumper off too. Then i held the bolt as high as it would go and chopped it off there. That made it just small enough to remove from the chassis. It took hours!!!!

Lucky i was replacing the bumper
