Last week I took my 53 plate TD4 Auto for its longest run (Approx 350 miles) since I removed the EGR valve and fitted a Blanking kit. The engine performed brilliantly except on accelaration I did get short bursts of smoke from the exhaust. I couldn"t real check what colour smoke it was because the back was full with luggage, so I was only able to see out of the wing mirrors and over the top of the luggage from the rearview mirror.
My question is? Would removing the EGR and fitting a Blanking Kit affect the amount of smoke on acceleration?
However I did notice a big increase in MPG on the same trip over my previous TD4s. I haven"t worked it out yet but it must have been over 40 MPG.
Anyone got a good, unripped or worn set of Freelander seats for sale?
Cheers and Happy new Year.

I've blanked the EGR on my last 4 cars, including my TD4 and I've never really noticed the difference in economy, performance or exhaust... possibly because it wasn't problematic in the first place - I'm sure others have a differing opinion. The emissions on mine are as clean as a whistle. Acceleration was solved with a remap.

Black smoke on acceleration could be down to the inlet manifold being choked up with sooty deposits. If the EGR bypass was fitted, but the manifold left dirty. That's the place to start looking;)

Being a diesel. There will be some smoke on heavy acceleration. Some will be from combustion at that point. However some will be soot that has collected in the exhaust. This gets dislodged as gas speed/ volume increases, adding to the mix.
Definitely clean the inlet manifold though.

Regarding the EGR blanking kit. My TD4 is due it"s MOT in April so will this be an issue? Will the MOT station fail it becasue I have blanked off the EGR valve?

No it won't fail if it's blanked. It could fail if there's excessive black smoke though.
