Hi there - I am looking for a Discovery 4 expert to help me buy 3 used Discovery 4's for a drive that will take us from London down the West Coast of Africa to Capetown. I know there are some issues with the Discovery so having someone who can inspect and assess one to be pretty confident it is in good enough condition to make the 20,000km journey (or one service interval as I call it!) I would obviously pay for this help :) Preferably close enough to London
Thx!

What you need is, someone with a crystal ball. I like to think I know a fair bit about cars and I'm able to choose a good one but I would not like someone to drive all that way based on my decision. Good luck though

thanks for the reply! yes, unfortunately there isn't anyone who hasn't flat out said "Toyota Landcruiser" in any case we will have a mechanic on board. With 3 cars I am hoping to bring some parts and spares for the journey and in the event of something to happening to one of the cars I guess it wont be the end of the world if we have to leave it behind!

With only the one "mechanic" on board, you might struggle with 26 gazillion computers on 3 D4's. Given that complexity is the enemy of reliability - always has been, always will be, and there is no redundancy on a vehicle, I too am going to say Toyota LC - I'm sure you have heard the saying - "If you want to go into the wilderness, take a LR - if you want to come back, take a Toyota"

It's also worth bearing in mind that although the likes of Top Gear (et al) use them extensively in remote areas - they also take a support team and a truck full of parts (!) - If you've got that budget, then knock yourself out, if not, then Toyo..... and .... older ones without all the nonsense driver aids and electronic sh*t.

Purely for my curiosity, why are you wanting to do this ?

We are doing this for Charity - Telecoms Sans Frontiers - we are in the Telecoms business and have customers along this route down. There will be no real expeditioning. We just want to get to Capetown comfortably and safely!

The charity bit is good to hear. Genuinely :).

Will JLR not assist ? or Toyota ? or ....

I'd have no doubt about our D1's doing this journey, nor any doubt about my ability to fix anything which broke on the way down ( or back )..... but a Chelsea tractor

Getting a second hand D4 to drive that distance is one thing, three of them
Take a few more as spares perhaps and see how many make it?
Think even D3 would be cheaper and better suited, if you go over the vehicles and fully service/check/prep them you may have half a chance but will be very expensive.

Why not take 3x Freelander 2's instead. Cheaper and easier to repair.
