Hi,
As you can see I am a new member, but already I have perused through easily 90 % of the threads, and I am missing out on some vital info. A quick background and the questions will follow.

Approximately 2 years ago I bought a 1989 110 with the infamous 19j TD:doh:, I continued to drive it making rolling repairs, including one horrendous instance where my water pump pulley fell apart on the motorway :eek:, until one day the engine was too ill to perform, it was parked up, and because I am in the military, has been sitting un loved for 7 months :(

Now the questions. What should I do?:confused: I am married so have an inflexible budget. (Got shopping bills lol:D) I am thinking either full strip down and re build, with same engine, or rebuild with a new/ different type of engine. Is it worth pilling cash into a 19j?

chubby (my 110) will be used for green laning, the occasional pay and play but mainly fun. I love the sound of having a v8! Also with it being a station wagon, we all know what has happened to the doors. so is it worth changing the body to become 3 doors, already looked into it, apparently if I put the sides from utility on, as long as I do not move the b pillars it is legal. Been done before?

as you can see, lots of thoughts, I have more bouncing round, need some help guiding through the many pitfalls, the last thing I want is to try a budget rebuild only to end up throwing my money at things pointlessly,

i know a land rover is not the best car for a budget but it is a way of life. that is not going to change.

 
Get an old scrapper Disco with a 200Tdi engine.
Keep the engine and all the parts to put into your 110 and get it running.
Flog all the bits off the Disco.
Now you have a running 110 worth a lot more money.
Run the 200Tdi 110 or flog it and get 110 van.
You'll be wasting money to converting it into a van.
 
From the point of view of someone who knows next to nothing about 110's, and don't really want one as I prefer SWB ...

I'd suggest that most people in the market for one would prefer it to be as original as possible. OK, 200 Tdi engine conversion is not a bad thing at all and to my mind makes it even more desirable ... but to chop a Station Wagon down to make a van seems a backward step and if I were looking to buy it I'd wonder why and what else had been done .. ;)

I'd rather have rotten doors and frames with a sound chassis and engine, than all of it a bit crap, IYSWIM.

by all the bits do mean the running gear? i am sure i read somewhere that the disco was 15% higher geared, is that true? is that good in a def?

i am trully new to 110's what would everyone suggest in order to sort the doors? i think that is the point that is throwing me most. i cant weld definately a skil i need to get.
 
I'll add my name to the list recommending a 200tdi - I've just finished my conversion and I'm over the moon with the results.

As for the doors - you've really got two choices. Refurb the ones you've got, or replace them. If they need a lot of welding that you can't do, speak to your local independent Landy dealer and see what they'd charge. At least then you'll have a ballpark figure. The alternative is to hit the breakers, eBay, sites like this, looking for better condition second-hand ones. They might still need some tidying, but as long as the frames are not rotten through they can be saved.

i can see how quickly this could turn very expensive. the doors i have are all a write off, some f***er decided to hang off them to break in, break being the very apt word. so new ones it is, hope i get lucky on ebay!:eek:

are the bits of the 19j saught after? to keep the ones that do work, going? anyone interested in bits?


just a random question, i know it is not cheap to run, but is there any other problems with the v8?
 
There will always be people wanting the old engines - I've got one sat in my garage that I need to clean up and get advertised somewhere. Don't expect to make mega-bucks out of it, but you will sell it.

One of the reasons people recommend the 200 tdi is it's almost a straight bolt-in replacement for the 19J. A V8 won't be. You've already mentioned the fuel economy - the other downside is that a petrol engine requires a load of extra electrickery, and if you take it near any deep water...
 
my v8 didnt like any water at speed, puddles of an inch troubled it.Was ok really slow up to the letter on the bonnet.Was great at ploughing up hills, tons of grunt for pulling out stuck mates.AWESOME noise!

About the 300, I had not even thought of it, what are the pros? Cons? Is it worth paying extra money for?

Sorry for the ignorance. But what would be involved?

however i am currently working in the desert, away with the RAF, maybe another time! lol
 
The 300 TDi is a great engine. Powerful, plenty of torque and relatively economical and even a moderately incompetent owner should be able to service them.They also run almost forever if the servicing and cambelt changes are done to schedule. However, if they are not properly serviced they are liable to go bang.
 
sorry to state the obvious, but i have read that to be true of all land rover engines,

was it not at the 300 that landrover changed the mounting positions on the rails?
 
well, i think the engine choice has been sorted, but are there any things regarding the entire re build.
what seems to take the longest? or catch first timers out? i am not saying i will not make the same mistakes, however, if i am more prepared i will be less prepared to cry like a baby, lol.

I really am asking for your moments or guesses what i may encounter? i am ready for the possibility of replacing my chassis, but are there random nuts that no one sees? etc?

sorry for the horrible questions, but if anyone has any questions on what i have experienced i will be happy to tell all i know.
