on an aside - are they any good for reducing water ingress when off roading?

I actually bought it to prevent my rad blocking up after wading in the muddy water on salisbury plain but thought I might as well use it in the cold too. Like I say, I'm shocked at how little temp difference it has made. If this snow comes in the missus will be using the landy. I'll keep you guys posted on how she feels it performs.

I ran my TD5 all day on saturday with the radmuff fully closed. I kept my diagnostic plugged in the whole time to keep an eye on the temp. I had one moment where I became worried when my temp climed rapidly and reached 94 Degs. That was climbing up a long fairly steep hill while doing about 50-60mph. I pulled into a layby to check the coolant level. All was ok so I pulled back out again. The rest of the time my coolant temp remained between 75 and 82 degs.
 
Hey Gents, I just fit an eberspacher hydronic D4WSC coolant heater in my 94 Defender 90. Now I am looking for a D2 airtronic (air) heater. I'm from Canada and have grown up on ice and snow, and this is what we do:
-block heater
-electric fan and rad muff - get rid of the constant running factory installed one
-synthetic oil everywhere
-snow tires or a set of chains
-check coolant and make sure it is a 50/50 or 60/40 mix for max protection
-BIG batteries with lots of "cold cranking" amps

If you want to go cheap, you need an ac mains heater as a minimum, plus do all your fluids. Most importantly your coolant - but don't forget about your washer fluid cause it will freeze solid when you need it most. I love my eberspacher coolant heater but it was a b%*& to install.
 
hi. biggest problem i have driving in the french /swiss alps is getting in
the landy . locks freeze up . i had to put vasiline on the door rubbers as they freeze to the door, impossible to open. spent many a hour with hair dryer thawing out door locks . i use a radiator muff. and replaced thermostat to a higher temp one, i think its 92 degrees which gets the eng temp up more quickly, and the heater is good now . I also have a
inverter inslalled so i can use 240 volt appliances.
i have two batterys installed which helps alot on extra cold mornings, last thing you want is a flat battery

I'm planning an expedition with a couple of mates up the Norwegian Arctic Highway in December this year, which goes as far north as Europe's got. Expected temperatures are as low as -36 deg C although the average will be higher.

Has anyone got any advice on modifications, recommended prep and things to watch out for in general when using a Defender TD5 in very low temperatures / on ice.

when i was in the bARMY we operated landrovers in norway every year(artic exercises)most of which had uprated heaters(hoses everywhere!)by erspacher i think...but i think youve got the heater problem covered,my advice would be to consider changing your engine oil as normal oils dont go that low,and 'studded tyres'....

I live in Bulgaria where we ave 40 degrees in the summer and down to minus 20 in the winter. I have a built in 3kw petrol generator (they dont mind the cold so much) and have a kenlowe engine heater and electric fan heater in the cab.

I decided on this set up as cheaper than going with diesel heaters and having the genny on board is of use all year round
