Where would be the best place to buy an ex-military Landrover? Is an ex-military the best way to start with owning a Landrover? I have just bought an old 110 2.5d that needs a lot of work to get tidy and I think I have bitten off more than I can chew. I'm looking for a 110-diesel hardtop for everyday use and long camping trips.

Ex-mod landrovers tend to be thrashed about, but very very well maintained. They have heavy duty chassis (considerably tougher than standard chassis) and the engine / gearbox will be in almost new condition. There are of course some old landrovers released by the MOD which are a pile of ****e and totally screwed. A good look under the bonnet and underneath should give you an all round insight.

I own an ex military Defender 110, (my first landy) ex Royal Engineers I think and being an ex squaddie I understand your concerns for buying an ex mod vehicle.
I think the you have to be that bit more cautious but they make damn good projects and they are just as solid as any other landy. Personally I wouldnt trade mine in for anything.

Have you thought about using a more practical car for the week & the 110 more for the weekend?

We use a P38 2.5 for the week (lets not argue over its practicality) & my wife a Scenic 19. tdi

For the weeknd I have the hybird - that way if something doesnt get done at the weekend on the hybrid - i have transport on monday morning.

there are a few places (via the net) that do military releases iam sure you find them.

thing about ex-mils is you can have a real dog thats done 5k and been neglected and it wont look good, or one thats done 150-200k and looks the bees with fresh paint etc. But look beyond the obvious.. all the usual corrosion etc. As a rule the lower the mileage the better the condition but the maintainance is fairly rigorous and this isnt always the case so BUY ON CONDITION not mileage.
 
ex mil are looked after better than anything you'll find else where... if a vehicle goes to the workshop with '.. a dented bumper.. it will be subjected to at least 3 inspections and usually more.. there is the 'In Inspection' done by a class 1 mechanic who checks everything on it, he then writes out a job card listing all the faults..
next comes the mechanic that does the actual work, who in his best interests had better ensure its in A1 condition..
then it has its out inspection where it everypart not just those faults listed on the job card is checked by a class 1 mechanic.

all servicing is carry out as per schedule

the underneath has extra thick underseal which pratically eliminates rust on the chassis.

of course there are times when comittments and other factors mean that a complete check is not done every time but next time round it will be .


so to say you can get an ex-mil that has done 5k and been neglected is total bollocks and an insult to the REME blokes wot look after them
