You've opened a large can of worms now! ;-)
For what it's worth I've got a plug & play unit works like a charm and makes a world of difference and can be removed when you sell.
I got mine from "diesel Bob" but there are many different makes and lots of threads on here.

Anyone had any dealings with Evolution Chips on a P38?
I noticed their website when I was doing a search and as they have an agent based in Dorchester (near me) so I thought I might see what they are offering. Remap and EGR removal at £409 all in, reckon that sounds pretty good. Any comments?
Web address Car and Van Remap Search. Evolution Chips.

Beware new MOT rules, removing the EGR could well be an MOT fail

Not possible to do live re-maps on old tech DCU's

I had a good look at the website and they did make it clear the P38 would have to be a de-solder and solder in a new chip unless of cause it is socketed. The egr part is optional but running on biodiesel runs a lot cleaner than pump diesel so emissions are generally very good but I will be aware of that. A question to ask I think. £359 without the egr job. They claim the new chip is undetectable by dealers electronics so that should be okay in terms of the MOT. MOT rule of no dismantling will still apply as I understand it. In common with most P38s, mine is a slug when it comes to hills and I am concerned that it will be even worse when I hook up our 22 foot caravan. This is the main reason I am considering some kind of tuning.

Leave the EGR valve in place and blank the vacuum pipe and gas inlet pipe. It still looks normal. I think I will avoid buying and EGR removal kit then if affected by the MOT.

At least one other thread has reported EC failure after attempting to remove and solder in a new chip. Personally i would always go for the plug in Power Box as there are no issues for the MOT and no risk of damage to the ECU.
The EGR will be an MOT fail under type approval rules regarding modifications if the stuff from VOSA is to be believed, although why it should be the governments business what we do to our cars I don't know, as long as they pass the emmisions test it should be none of their business:mad::mad::mad:
