he there everyone - just wanting opinions and the like

basically i am in the early stages of planning a nice exped to europe - god knows where. uk to corfu via amsterdam, frankfurt, paris, lisbon, seville, barca, monaco, rome etc etc etc.

at the moment in the market for a landie. was initially looking for an old shot one for about 1.5k tops - but now im going to sell my C2 and that should give me about 5 / 6k for a landie 110. the landie will probably end up the support vehicle, got a few mates looking at buying some old bangars and badging them up nicely - maybe discos or old beetles or whatever

anyway, was wandering if anyone had any hits tips or advice? any kit you recommend apart from a shed load of spares, any places that are a must visit? any awesome off road places? any particular things to look out for?

cheers all!

How long you going for? Im going to the Alps in August to drive some of the old military roads between Italy and France, most of them are near the coast and Monoco so may fit in with your plans. Will report on it when i return.

spend the money and get a good 300 tdi 110 van or SW.

yea looking at a SW - means i can fit some people in when back home.

i dont have any time to return by at the moment, possibly a 2 month trip - something like that.

my problem is i am new to the landie world - im in the TA at the moment (going reg after uni) so know the bare bones and will put myself on an engineers course beforehand - but it makes buying a little more tricky

im looking at a 1985 2.5 litre diesel - looks in good nick - supposedly almost no rust at all (will obv check) new clutch and all sorts of mods - looks fantastic and reasonable price also. in fact may head off to the off topic bit here and see if anyone has msn and fancies spending a few minutes chatting bout em!

very interested bout those roads, will definitely route via them!

Depends on where your location is............ if you ask nicely maybe one of the eggspurts on here can meet up with ya and give ya their honest opinion............ just so you dont buy an ashtray :D

that's 2.5K over priced

yea going to put a lower offer in on it - it seems in good condition - and will ask him to take off cash for tax also. seems in good enough nick though - will go to see it tomorrow hopefully

ive driven quite alot the other side of the water.......best advise i can give is no matter how desperate you get.....never ,and i mean NEVER drink yellow snow! otherwise simply enjoy!

i do hope you've read the replies given in your other thread

not seen the other thread, or clicked the piston heads link, but i think you should be looking at a 300 tdi original with no mods. get the best base vehicle you can for the money 1st, upgrades later.

Here is my before and after so to speak.

Why Europe just out of interest?

Not putting you off at all, and you have probably considered this anyway, but bear in mind 2 months in Europe is going to cost you a lot in fuel - it is about £1.15 a litre...so work out your average MPG and how many miles you reckon you will cover and see what that comes to!

yea it will be a bomb on petrol i know. thinking about stacking the roof rack with jerry cans full of petrol from the uk but dont know how kindly customs will take to that!

chosen europe for ease. its easiest to get to, i know it and people in various countries well to makes it easy. ideally i would ship the landie over to canada and then do a north south drive - in an ideal world. but europe as a starting point to get some experience sounds good to me!

Have a great time!

I've done several short (1/3 week) trips around Western Europe, there's so much to see, be it the Alps/Pyrenees or the coasts and everywhere in between.

Carrying fuel in cans onto a ferry is a no-no, even inside, customs take a dim view and the ferry company will state it in the terms and conditions of the ticket.

From here in Southampton, Luxembourg is nearer to me than my uncle in Falkirk, and I drove my old Series 111 2.5 n/a to Italy and camped there on the 2nd night. So although vast, if you plan, you can get quite far into Western Europe. Enjoy!

looks nice mate. my sticking point is the fact that i want a CSW i guess

well buy a 300 tdi county station wagon then... they do exist! my point was i bought the best base vehicle i could afford. (300tdi county van as there is only 2 of us and van sides are more secure) then spent the money modifying it how I wanted it, NOT how someone else has done it.

Why are you wanting to buy a landrover to travel in Europe , its not as if you are even going in middle of winter ? You dont need 4wd , you could afford a fairly late Van , more mpg less to go wrong more room to camp in or carry stuff . Most are quieter , and cruise well tyres are cheaper and so on . Is it just you want a landrover to keep for a long time ? please dont be offended as I am just trying to be constructive as you mention a limited budget . :)

griff - yes indeed - i am hopefully collecting one on friday

tac i am not on that tight a budget. the trip will involve elements of off roading. it will also be used i hope for off roading or laning in the uk as i would like to get into that side of things. it will also be used in a military environment on a number of occasions so it really needs to be a capable off roader as well
