:doh::doh::doh:
I took my old windscreen frame and gave it a clean with white spirit, let it dry and then rubbed down with scotch brite. I then applied an etch primer over the top which dried over two days to a nice smooth hard finish.

i then gave it a top coat of cellulose/thinners from my spray gun at a 50/50 mix. It went on really well and set nice and smooth. however, after a couple of days i put a seal stip along the top and it wandered slightly so i lifted the sticky backed foam seal to reposition and the red cellulose lifted/flaked :eek:

Should I have used a primer after etch-priming before my top coat cellulose? the etch-primer said it should be a suitable base on its own prior to a top coat.

Any help appreciated. Im touching up my panels next week and would like to know what prep to do before spraying the cellulose top coat over the exisiting paint.

I use primer over etch, but did you take the shine off with wet and dry before the top coat ?

nope i didnt rub it down...maybe thats why it didnt adhere? not porous enough to stick?

When my bulkhead got two-pack primed i quickly went over it with scotch brite (not ever so thoroughly) now im worried that it may start flaking of knocked...crumbs...

All primer needs a good key before the top coat , should be okay with two pack though as it seems to have a bit more bite.

Well it used to, been a few years since I used it dunno if it's the same stuff.

when i resprayed me landy a couple of months back..we etch primed the whole landy,,then used a 2 pack primer and then 2 pack paint..you must paint on top of etch primer within an hour to gain a good bond..if yours took 2 days to dry ya done summit wrong,ours dried almost instantly..

What you need to do is read the application details, we use FCR Primer on aircraft aluminium surfaces, which needs to be covered with a topcoat primer within 2 hours. You do not need to rub down the etch primer as it is really thin and you will only rub the primer away on the edges, what is really important is the aluminium needs to be really clean. Try cleaning it with MEK or some other strong solvent using clean rags. For your own protection make sure you use a spray mask with the right filters.
Good Luck

It dried in a few hours but I left it a couple days before applying top coat...I'll try spraying sooner next time!

Thanks for the tips, the etch primer only said it was suitable as a primer for a top cost but didn't give a curing/application time. I have some isopropyl alcohol at my disposal for cleaning, and I always use a mask :0)
Would a laquer help stop it flaking if chipped?

when i used etch primer on my landy i used it on a few patches then i rubbed it down and put on a 2 pack grey undercoat and then put on the camel top coat - been on 2 years now and all the way to mongolia and back and its been fine.

The etch primer only needs to be put on bare aluminium. I only sanded off the paint where possible on mine then painted onto the original primer. I used some etch primer where I had to sand down to bare metal. Looks fine to me and I jet washed it the other day and the paint's still on. Make sure you don't etch it unless you're going to paint it right away.

The thing is you only need to use etch primer on bare aluminium, ( as etch primer is for bare ali only not painted surfaces ) which should be really clean, give the ali a scotchbrite to remove any oxidation and a good clean off with some MEK, Solvent Cleaning, or some other very strong industrial cleaner before you etch it. You can also do a water break test to see if the ali is really clean. After you have finished your paint job you can do a tape test to see if the paint has a good adhesian to the ali.
