No signs of any nobheads today though...just a couple of VERY young lookin lads in 2 vitaras-but they were on the byway..and i made them back up to let me pass...to the sound of my boy shoutin "Poozuki" at them! That was at the Dunmow one which is actually nearer Gt Easton in Tilty, Tilty Hill Farm to Sucksted Green.
The signage is unclear as a VERY old sign at the farm entrance says Bridleway, but is quite clearly mapped on all mapping i can find as a byway..the sign at the other end is a new-ish sign that also say bridleway..very odd..its been clearly driven lots too

Essex CC Highways Dept have confirmed this as a Byway & will be correcting the mistake with the Bridleway signpost
 
Not sure how many of you Essex guys know, but Knightingale Lane is open again...
Dont try it unless you have a winch :) , or are with somebody with a winch....& DONT try it alone!

At the A127 end, best keep to the edge of the field on the dryer land...our club has been in contact with Tinnermans (The Garden Centre), who would prefere you did this, other than plough-up the grass field (Where the byway ACTUALLY should be). Please close the "gate" after you have been through.

Hopefully getting my Landrover 90 in the next couple weeks, is there many of you who go greenlaning??

I am a total novice and live in Chelmsford, done motorbikeing for years and now wanna try the off road scene. Be nice to meet a few local off roaders who can teach me the doo's and dont's of off roading and advise me on how to make sure my landy doesnt get stuck, and if it does i know how to get out haha

i meant no landy no laning for me cos ive sold mine!!!
Missus is claiming the proceedes of selling me other car for drivi9ng lessons so wont be able to get another for a while. Work wont let me take me golf out laning and they dont lend there 110s out-apprently theyre needed for businees type stuff.Wotever!

Its short (Only about 3/4mls), & most of it is nice enough.

There are 3 or 4 "holes" that you cant avoid.

1 (The 1st one if you go in from the A128 end) is about 3 or 4 car lenghts long....motors with 33" tires just belly-up & have to winch out (Although as it dries up through the summer, there may be a chace to drive it)..I run 235/85's, & just make sure the winch-bitch is out, & There's plenty of plasma out. There are wooden bridges for walking accros.

The rest of the holes are short-sharp (More like a ditch). anything other than a 90 will get caught up..even then, they may end up nose-high, unable to get traction.

I made the mistake of not having quite enough momentum on one of them, ended up suspended on the winch-bumper & the rear bumper.....wheels a-hanging!:doh: But I only needed a little pull, to get out.

I havnt done it since March, so it may have dried out & got a bit less challanging.

Best bet, is to take a wonder over to "Essex off road" pay'n'play site, just off Regement Way, opposite the golf -course in Chelmsford.

Go for a look....see what its all about....then maybe pay ya money & go for a play on the simple stuff to start.....most people there will be ok about giving friendly advise, so long as:

  • You have suitable recovery points Front & Back of your motor
  • Have suitable recovery ropes/strops
  • Have a couple of suitable shackles
  • listen to any safety-related advise they give (ie, Dont stand astride the rope as they are pulling etc etc)
  • Take some heavy-duty gloves
  • Dont mind getting yourself/motor a bit dirty
If Brentwood/Warley area isnt too far for you to travel, the Brentwood club meet up most Tuesdays (just for a get together/chat/Drink)
1st Tuesday in the month we go laneing (Locally)
3rd Sunday in the month we go out for the day, (Either Lanes further afield, or a pay'n'play).

Everything you have just posted screams TRO if not voluntary then deffo temporary until the bomb holes can be repaired. This is a public Highway ya talking about. If as you say, it can only be attempted with huge tyres and a lift kit. Then it shouldn't be driven at all. :mad:

The TRO was lifted at the end of last year (As I understand it, it had been closed for at least a year)... The "repairs" that were carried out, where to put some foot-bridges in, for people to walk around the Obstacles. I never drove it prior to this year, so cant comment on if any other "repairs" had been made.

Doesn't matter. If it's that bad, that a standard disco can't drive it then it shouldn't be driven at all. & ignoring this basic rule of greenlaning is irresponsible and just make us all look like a bunch of cuunts.:mad:

Thankyou sooo much for the advise it helps alot luckly me and a friend are going into landy driving together so gonna get one each. As for brentwood etc i only live in writtle so that sounds pretty good. where abouts do you meet? And do you go to the brentwood one?

Also do you know of any landys for sale for around 2k in the essex area as im awaiting to view one in a weeks time so thought keep my options open!
