Series 3 Essential tool kit for home mechanic?

1.Proper imperial spanners...dont use metric equivalents or you’ll round off all the bolts
2. Stilsons...in case of above roundedness
3.Angle grinder........

I was going to add a vote for a set of these. They were invaluable to me, trying to undo so many corroded/damaged nuts and bolts on my Landy. Most ended up shearing off, but at least I got them off!

I also found a speed brace quite useful for quickly running long bolts in, or nuts up long threads.

Torque wrench?

speed brace is the ideal tool for starting difficult/misaligned threads

Tbh I only use the irwins at work, but each time i do they save my bacon.
I treat them terrrible, hammer etc, they do expand and bugger up from the hammering but they are classed as a consumable so cannot grumble.
Just yesterday Merc clutch air servo botl sheared off, 5mm oft hread left poking out, slip joints failed, pipe wrench failed, heat and nutgrip nose pliers failed, irwins out bit of a struggle but she came out clean.

As I’m just in from doing diffs, relay, swivels etc, it occurred to me that the oil pump thing I use is essential for getting oil into swivels, gearbox, etc. Given that fluids is something that should be dine regularly I’d say a hand oil pump is pretty vital !

I've got a 2 x Sealey 1L pump bottles, one for engine oil and the other for diff/swivel oil. Makes it a lot easier.

Depending on the year of the Land Rover you will need a few whitworth size spanners. Perhaps not to carry around but certainly in the workshop.
Nearly all my spanners/sockets are Britool bought over the last 55 years and most still good,only had to replace the odd smaller size like 1/2" A/F that gets a lot of use.

I've stopped asking family for tools as presents cos they seem to think a set of screwdrivers for a tenner is better value than one really good screwdriver for a tenner

On that note a 1/4 witworth is needed for battery terminals. Do not use a 14mm!

I work on a general rule that if I need to borrow a tool 3 times then I ought to buy it.
The last was a set of ⅜ drive tamperproof torx, paid for themselves in 2 days.
Before that it was the high torque rattlegun which is seldom off the bench now.

If your buying tools or anything for the car from Halfords a trade card will give you massive savings. either try and blag one or find somebody willing to order stuff for you, they order online then you pick up and collect paying cash.

Do they have Halfords in Canada ?

I'd never heard that name till this post. We have Canadian tires which is a DIY heaven and they have a tool brand called Mastercraft. Thay sell many other brands as well and every town has a Canadian tire (at least in Quebec).
