Alright, guys n gals,

Sorry if its a stupid question or been asked before (did a search and it came back with nothing) BUT.......

Can anybody please tell me where abouts i can find the engine number on a TD4 2001 Freelander? with pics preferably, bin hunting on the net for a while now but come up short every time :( theres no engine number on the documents of the vehicle at all either, i've found the prefix number on microcat using the VIN number but for the life of me i can't find the number on the block????

Any help appreciated an thank you in advance :)

Steve.

The model/name of the engine is the M47 of BMW, but where the serial number of the engine is I don't know, sorry.

I also couldn't find one on mine and for ages I suspected it had a new engine as the only number I could find wasn't the one on the VIN.

In the end I found it when I took the EGR off to clean it. It was in a different place to where Chaser suggested.

It was on the right hand end face of the engine, above the bellhousing, kind of behind where the pipe from the exhaust bolts on to the EGR... mine's a manual, perhaps it's different on the auto.

cheers for that chris, did yours have any letters in the number at all? as i can see a number on the block by where chaser suggested, yet this ones a manual too (had the box out to do the clutch but didn't see anything above the bellhousing at all?

Cheers,

Steve.

Don't think so, just 8 numbers. If I recall, this wasn't the stamped one, it was a sticker with bar code... it's possible there's one where chaser says too but I've never looked there.

I think you must have seen the gearbox serial number on the bellhousing below the egr.....

If this is still of help or not already known but today I looked at the car COC (Certificate Of Conformity) form (to know the chassis# for the ordering of a new seal for the IRD RH driveshaft) and saw the engine number marked on it.

ah rite, thanx for that willo, but this car is a dutch one wanting to import into Portugal so all the documents are different and we can't find an engine number anywhere on the doc's like, but thanx for the info anyhow

Just had a look at the RAVE and it says:

Td4 engine serial number is stamped on the bottom LH side of the cylinder block.

Is this of any help ? (Sorry but I cant copy the drawing of the engine where it shows the location).

There's something odd there though Will because the text says LH for the 3 engines but the diagrams show the location as on the right side of the block???????

Couldn't make out what side the picture shows. There are no aux. items screwed on the block thus for me it's ?????. Don't know enough to see whether it is the L or RH side :eek::eek:

Cheers for that about RAVE, will have a look myself on there after, could it be that it says its on the left hand side of the engine meaning left hand side of the car? as from the front that would then be the right hand side wouldn't it?

in anything relating to engines quoting left or right is always as looking from the from the front of the engine ie, number 1 cylinder so in this case it should be as if you are looking from the right wing into the engine bay.

There seems to be an error in rave as the text and images don't match. Just look at the bottom of the block on both sides and hopefully you will see it but there could be items fitted in the way, perhaps the ac pump bracket?

If the following is not correct one is kindly requested not to come and get my hide for it, but I checked again the rave cd, was looking to try to find out the make of the turbo, today I had a discussion with a petrolhead who said he was going to install a Garrett turbo onto his BMW 525d, at least the Garrett has ballbearings and not a simple copper pod where it spins in. I told him I thought the M47 of our FL had a Garrett mounted thus to be sure I was checking but couldn't find the make. Anyway, by checking the different drawings of the engine etc.. I saw a similar drawing as the one where they state the position of the engine number and as I can see the engine number should be in the middle and at the bottom of the front side of the engine?

(They mention the location of the solenoïde for the turbo on the RH side near the turbo so it looks as they look at the engine from the left hand side (passenger side for the UK) of the car, if I understand correctly Chaser said one should always look at the engine from the opposite side ??(Driver's side for the UK) ??

All I can say is if it's not a series of misprints then that's the first time in all the years I've worked on engines that the front end of an engine is is it's output end.

To my knowledge industry standard identifies left and right of an engine viewed from the front. An engine runs clockwise when viewed from the front, number one cylinder nearest the front. :)

I find it also normal the way you said it, but as it's apparently written as being the other way round ?? I believe it the way you tell is correct, after all the gearbox is connected to the rear of the engine where the final driveshaft comes out, right ? Anyway, not that important if not needed, as long as one known what side he has to look at, after all, who said: what's in a name ???:)

They probably gave the job of putting the serial numbers on to the same bloke who put the fuel pump in the wheel arch?:confused:

Steve.

HELP!! I've got the same problem. Bought a brand new Defender 110 and trying to get it registered but having problems as the engine number is nowhere on the COC. Have poked around in the engine bay and can't seem to find anything. Any help/guidance (and especially diagrams, photos, etc) are highly highly appreciated. Thanks guys!
