hello all,

hopefully some body will have some info on this fault on my much loved 110 td5 (2003)

Start engine with no problems and can rev engine normally (usually)
however as soon as the road wheels move ( only about 6 inches) the engine warning light comes on and the accelerator does not function

then i am stuck with tick over revs only

I considered that the accelerator pot might be faulty but it sems to work perfectly on startup

Had a friend plug in his ecu computer the faults read as follows

1) fault detected with drivers demand logged
2) 160 can error fault active
3) Engine speed outside bounds

would appreciate any pointers

****WARNING******

Also a word of warning while investigating the fault i checked under the
drivers seat for loose connections on the ECU or a blown fuse,

it appears that a small engine oil leak (so small so as not to be noticable) had tracked up the conduit covering one of the looms going to the ECU and had contaminated the multi plug on the ECU

don’t think its the cause of my problem but it might prevent future torment for somebody

Ta shifty,

I cleaned out the multi plug already with aerosol solvent but it did not solve the problem,

but i will try it again tomorrow in case i missed any

Hi,
Oil leaking through the fuel injection loom and wicking its way down to the ECU is a common fault, so either way you'll need to sort that in future.

I've been searching for the OBD fault codes and have found this information meanwhile...
A description of the ECM unit itself which is useful... given the right wiring it can control an electric fan for example and of course cruise control with a couple of simple switches.
LUCAS TD5 DIAGNOSTIC (LAND ROVER) (SM010)

and a complete breakdown of the codes from a site in the US (OBD-II is a global standard). Post 1996 the ECM was OBD-II.
Troublcodes.net Trouble Codes OBD & OBD2 Trouble Codes and Technical info & Tool Store. By BAT Auto Technical
Now info on the Internet doesnt come with a quality stamp... and your 160 code isn't listed. If the code was P0160 then OBD-II says it's an Oxygen Sensor issue.

Hope all this helps.
Cheers,

There was an article in LRO recently stating that the main red plug once oil is in it requires replacing but once done sorts the issue.
So long as you clean it thoroughly you dont need a new one.
take the lid off the ECU and clean inside as the oil can penetrate.
Also peel back 2 inches of the loom insulation and clean between the wires. Dont retape and the oil will not reach the multiplug.
Also do the same at the top end of the injector harness where it comes out of the head.

thanks all for help, i replaced the crankshaft rotation sensor (located on the bell housing) last week and have done about 200 miles since so i am hoping that is the problem solved,

will have to sort the oil in the loom problem has anybody used expanding foam to plug either end of the loom conduit

1) Apparently the oil also wicks down inside the wires where it cant be cleaned.
2) The later td5 looms duz not have the problem.
3) intrigued to know how the oil can get through a moulded connector inside the ECM.
i am assured that cleaning is only a temporary fix.

Get it engine speed out of bounds. Pretty good clue!

The faulty wiring loom leaking oil is under the rocker cover, not the one between the engine and the ECU. But the oil causes the problem when it meets the ECU, hence all the cleaning.

It's possible but I've never heard of this before. I guess you're totally buggered if this is the case. :(

Yippee! What's the difference between old and new?

Don't know how but it can and does. Mine had oil INSIDE the ECU. My temporary fix has lasted almost two years now. :)
