Who can tell me what the difference is between the 19j engine and the 200tdi?
19j is basically a 2.5na with a turbo ,they did coat pistons which helped but they are prone to bore /ring wear, and cracking heads ,also indirect injection so ,poor starting etc,200 tdi is a direct injection specifically designed turbo engine and rarely failWho can tell me what the difference is between the 19j engine and the 200tdi?
Thanks for the replies, e reason I ask is that I bought an engine for £100 and the guys said it was out of a 1990 Landy so I stupidly thought it was a 200tdi. The rocker cover is not the same but everything looks similar at a glance. I don't suppose there is any redemption for this engine r can it be made better?

Here you have 19J, 200tdi discovery & 200tdi defender
200tdi is a much better engine. Maybe the best but thats another discussion
why confused theres been an option for air con for a long while on defenders ,they had an extra piece that fastened the full length under lower dash for the outletsin the 3rd pic is that air con pump?![]()
Im going to show my ignorance here but i have a disc 200tdi fitted ( so i was told ) but i have a turbo up high where the defender 200tdi's is.![]()
Interesting, i haven't checked yet but my dip stick is just cable tied to a pipe off the turbo as if there was no original place to connect it to!From what I can remember the oil dipsticks are different, turbo is up high on a defender so have a check on it dipstick see if it has a metal pull if it is then you got a defender 200tdi
