Engine cutting out under load - found out its the snorkel

Of course we shouldn't discount the resistance of the snorkel setup finding a weak link elsewhere, it could be your turbo to airbox pipe that is crushing, simply because the turbo is sucking and the snorkel isn't providing.

Could be a bonnet off and get a mate to watch whilst you drive kinda job

Cheers bud, this is what i ended up doing once it was all back together.

The turbo to air box has a little bit of movement but looks like it moves where it should if that makes sense, certainly not collapsing.

Then i noticed the top hose from the intercooler having some movement, which it shouldn't as its an uprated silicone version. Never got to the speeds i needed but found it didn't take much to make it collapse on itself, so there is my problem.

Now going to get some 50mm steel tubing so i can fabricate up a new pipe that i know won't collapse ;) as had a look at ready made ones and they are just under £70  steel tube should only cost me a tenner and an hour or so with a grinder and the welder and jobs hopefully a good one.....

Well, all done and dusted, and she is now running a 100% better...

Started off with some nice new shiney pipework...

Changed the bottom Turbo pipe too - well would have been rude not to since I was re-doing all the pipes ;)

Then off with the old mushroom snorkel top....

...and when it was off noticed a few air restrictors within the pipe work....

and then on with the new 'Ram' intake - got the biggest I could find with a 3" internal diameter...

And all done...

Driven quite a few miles now, up some steep hills, foot to the floor and no cut outs like before, and seems to pull a little better too.

Thanks Sturox
fitted my snorkel 5 months ago with a mushroom top and getting same symtoms since, thought it was fuel and couldn't find anything. will have to check same hoses on intercooler also and replace mushroom with a ram box.
Cheers

Nice one, glad i read it all before I replied.

It happened to me in the Disco a few months ago. Just been through a ****e-load of mud and water, trying to power up hill, going through some forest in North Yorkshire and it started losing power, wouldn't hold revs, and making a strange noise, thought I'd broken summat ..

Stopped and looked at all sorts in the engine, then someone came up, think it was Dave (DavidSally), who removed the large leaves being sucked into the snorkel top and blocking it ... ;)

Sturox where did you get the blue are duct pipe from? The one running from air filter to snorkel? Needing some my self and that looks like the number for me..

I know you currently have the problem fixed but there may still be an issue worth looking into. I had a problem with a split hose before my turbo. It had drawn in some dirt which in turn chocked the inter cooler. It had the same symptoms as yours. Fine on idle etc. only when really accelerating the engine couldn't get enough air and vacuumed the top hose flat. After removing the intercooler it appeared fine and you could blow through it however its flow must be reduced as I tried a different inter cooler and ran perfect with no hose vacuum.

By putting in the alloy pipe work you will have stopped that happening but you may still have a blocked inter cooler. I would be inclined to try a different inter cooler in it with a rubber top hose to see if the problem is still there as you might still not be getting the airflow you should therefor your engine will be under performing.

Cheers mark

Cheers Mark,

Might just give that a go, as its probably been about a year since I had the intercooler out and gave it a good clean with petrol.

No probs. it just sounds the exact sand symptoms as I had. Took me a while to find it as I just assumed it was fine because I could blow through it. After testing a load of other things including the turbo it ended up being the intercooler.

Cheers.
