Engine cutting out under load - found out its the snorkel

Been having a few problems lately, that when under load and accelerating with high'ish revs all of a sudden the engine stops, turbo stops spooling and no power, lift off, give it a second and then you are good to go again, but if you hard accelerate again, the same happens again.

So after a lot of investigation, changing the lift pump, fuel filter (have removed my sedementer) etc then worked on the air side of things.

So stripped back the air filter - then ran it and it worked. Put back on the filter, and still good. Put back on the enclosure and still good. Put back on the 90 degree bend from the air box and still good. Then as soon as I attach the pipe to the snorkel it cuts out.

So I now need to remove the wing to see if there is any blockage in the pipe, and I might also look at changing the mushroom top to a safari type top to see if that aids air flow.

Has anyone else got a mushroom top snorkel on their disco???

This is my set up I have made and have used without any real issue till a few months ago...

Just thought I would mention this in case other people have problems, and it might help if finding out why

does this happen when moving at speed? low or high, idle etc?

sorry, should of read the post better. I wonder if the air rushing over the filter is causing a depression in the mushroom and tube.

Its only when you have the foot to the floor accelerating, to say get up a hill or to actually get the old brick up to a decent speed - normally getting from 40 to 50ish mph.

Once you are at the speed its fine. Idle is fine, driving normally around town is fine, even if you accelerate hard but not flat to the floor (just ease off a bit) its fine.

So I didn't know there was a fault to be honest, as its not a sports car so its not driven hard, but was out up a fair few banks and noticed it cutting out so then of course you need to spend a few nights in the garage pulling it all apart to put back together again

The tube from the mushroom to the wing is strong steel - left over pipe I use for exhausts - so that aint going to compress - the mushroom seems ok, as had a play with that and its still in the same form, and you can't really move it - the only part I haven't checked is the flexible pipe I have that runs from the bottom of the snorkel down-pipe to the actual filter - so that may be perished or as the engine is sucking air, its just compressing the pipe as its lost its strength over time...

Once I have the wing off, I will look at putting a steel tube along the wing to the filter to see if that sorts it out, as I have spare tube left, so that will be a 'free' fix as I have already spent replacing things that didn't really need replacing yet....

no what i mean is, the air inside could effectivly be drawn back out of the tube.

Like sticking your head out of a car window sideways and trying to breath, it takes your breath away.... just an idea. I dont tend to stick my head out the window when driving :hysterically_laughi

But if that was the case it would happen most of the time and not just under heavy load

Anyways, think it could be the flexi tubing after having a good think last night, so will let you know how I get on.

I think it's more likely the bore of the Snorkel that's going to be the issue if anything

BUT

This is only a recent issue? The snorkel was there before and all was ok?

If so then something else is to blame I think

Most likely a fueling issue I'd say

Hear what you are saying, and yes it was fine when I did it all a few years ago, so thinking the piping is the issue. The bore is the standard Southdown size, as I used the bonnet moulding etc for ease

I have eliminated all other things (fuelling etc), as I said in my first post - it runs fine when the snorkel is not attached to the 90 degree bend from the air box, and re-appears when I connect it again - so I know it is something from that connection to the top of the snorkel - and as everything from the outside of the wing is heavy duty metal, by elimination I reckon its the flexi tubing I used has deteriorated over time - like the intercooler pipes do

Sounds like a flexible pipe is delaminating with enough 'suck' on it. It may look normal on inspection thou.

If the inside of the pipe is "sucking itself inwards" it will give you that symptom. It can also show in the exhaust emissions going really black under full load, but not always.

have you checked your turbo pipe work one of them could have gone weak or delamlnated within and closeing up under pressure

Cheers but not them, they have new silicone tubes on, plus i did all those checks before i got checking the snorkel

That's what i have concluded although can't say i have seen any black smoke.

All new jubilee clips bought, just in case, for when i strip it back again to replace flexi pipe with steel pipe. Hopefully will get time to have a look tomorrow. Also hoping i might get chance to weld up the inner wing whilst i have the wing off.

Just some decent wired ducting will be fine, yours must be getting sucked flat

A ram air scoop will help prevent crushing at speed but basiballyca mushroom should be fine

Of course we shouldn't discount the resistance of the snorkel setup finding a weak link elsewhere, it could be your turbo to airbox pipe that is crushing, simply because the turbo is sucking and the snorkel isn't providing.

Could be a bonnet off and get a mate to watch whilst you drive kinda job
