Engine cuts out when using indicators

:eek: My 1999 2.0L XDi has started to cut out when I indicate. It does not do this when I switch on the hazard warning lights though so I am thinking it is the actual switch shorting out. Can anyone please help?

No, but I will try this thanks for the advice.
I was thinking that because the hazard warning lights, which operate the same relay did not stop the engine it must be a short before the relay does this sound logical?

Hazard warning light switch has a permanent (not ignition switched) live whereas the indicators circuit is fed via an ignition swtched live feed. As a general rule whenever strange things like this happen on vehicle electrics a bad earth is usually found to be the culprit. However if all the indicator circuit earths prove to be good then check all the live feed connections for signs of corrosion/ looseness etc. D..
 
Hi,
I agree with this but wouldn't the wiring from the relay to the indicator bulbs be the same? So if there was a fault after the relay it would be triggered by the hazards or the indicator switch. An electrician that I know reckons it will be a short rather than a bad earth, which may be causing the safety fuel cut off to operate.
 
As said look for obvious first . if you suspect earth. run jump lead from bat earth to engine block n try indicators then wi eng running
 
Thanks for all your advice chaps here is what I have tried so far: -

Removing the flasher unit and operating the indicator switch does not stop the engine. I have cleaned the earth point for the indicator system and have tried connecting a jump lead to the earth on the battery to the engine to eliminate the main earth. Is it possible that the relay itself could be shorting out and stopping the engine?

YES it is possible that it is the relay. By the sounds of it there is a good chance that the fault is a short and that it is spiking the ECU. If it were tripping the fuel shut off switch you would have to manually reset it. Try changing the relay first as this is a quick and easy option. Failing that it is time to bring out the power probe/test light and test the circuit for continuity and polarity.
 
Well I have tried a new relay to no avail. It looks like I am going to have to tracing through the wiring. I have two circuit diagrams that show a indicator relay and hazard warning relay but all I can find is the flasher relay. Does anybody know if the other relays actualy exist and where they are?

Think the relays for the indicator and flasher are in the glovebox drivers side, you should hear them working.

I had a dodgey hazard warning switch once, every time I indicated right the hazard switch light up and flashed, it did it from new, I got out of the FL and checked the LH indicators, they werent on, yet the hazard switch flashed.:confused:

Anyway some many moons later I was removing the hazard switch, for other reasons, noticed one of the pins was bent silly. Straightened it back and the thing stopped flashing when indicating right.

Isolate the hazard switch and try it after that.

I removed the plug going into the indicator stalk today. Found I was only getting 3.2v from the live. Traced the wire back to the hazard switch where it was getting 6.7v. Followed this wire back to the fusebox where it went into a multiplug in the back of the fusebox. I pulled the fuse for the indicator and was getting over 12v. Checked for continuity between the wire from the fusebox to hazard switch and this was fine. I am wondering if it is something in the fusebox itself between the output side of the fuse to the mulitplug connection. I have had the fusebox apart but it is impossible to tell due to the way it is made. Anymore suggestions would be appreciated.

:p Happy days, I have found the problem. Traced to the ignition switch contacts worn. Phoned my local Landrover dealer who had one in stock. Only £13.99!!!! and ten minutes to fit. Everything is working, I even fixed my heated rear screen which has never worked. Found one of the spades had corroded and broken off, so soldered it on and hey presto.
 
Neither are we mate, ;)
just a bunch of enthusiasts, some members could do a better job your average mechanic, or dare I say it, even better than the dealers.
For some of us, in the words of Mad Hat Man, its a fool time hobby ;)
