Everything works fine when I turn key to position 2. When I then turn to start the engine everything goes dead apart from lights. Does this mean its an ignition barrel problem? I thought about the BCU but the rear window stops working as I turn the key.

Apart from which lights? .... dash/warnings or exterior ?

Exterior. Dash lamps come on normally and go out leaving just the normal handbrake light etc. but when the key is turned one position further the radio, air con, windscreen wipers, electric windows etc stop, but indicators etc still work. Thanks.

The exterior lamps are not through the auxiliary circuits relay so they normally stay on...it seems that all you miss is cranking so first of all check the lucar connector on the starter solenoid to be well tightened, if it is let ignition on 2 in neutral, remove relay R2 and bridge the perpendicular cavities in the fusebox with a wire, if it starts the problem is on the starter circuit

btw can you hear the pump with ignition on 2 ?

Went out just now and pushed the lucar connector more firmly onto the starter and it started alright. It is not a very reassuring fit and it was disconnected when we took the starter off when changing the clutch a couple of months ago. I always fear the worst outcome. Thankls for the help.
