Anyone know about the inner workings of the EGR valve? Mine is caked inside with 9 years of crud. I have given it a good clean but I was expecting there to be some moving parts in there, it being called a valve!
Mine appears to be stuck solid, shut, should I be able to operate the valve manually?
Any advice appreciated.

yeah take it of and fit a blank far better no problems no gunk and crap anymore and better smoother running
read all the egr comment for more info but deffo the way forward
if you still want an egr valve you can have mine for free

Yes once youve decrudded it you can move it but it is against a spring which us stronger than you would expect........unless that was just mine!! I can remember the exact technique now but think when I had mine off it was obvious where to apply force to move it. A lot of folks remove them but ive kept mine up until now, cleaning it at least once a year.

Thanks for the info guys. Think I'll try free mine off for now but will look into blanking it off in the future.

if you do remove a EGR and put a blanking one in what happens to all the gasses that supposed to be re burnt also does the out put of gasses increase out of the exhaust and there for could you get a fail on the MOT.

Metered Smoke Test (Diesel)
The metered smoke test has been conducted in EU countries for many years. During this test, a calibrated smoke meter is used to assess the density of the smoke from compression ignition (diesel) engined vehicles.

The engine will be accelerated up to governed speed and the smoke density measured.

Engines that emit very little smoke and achieve a meter reading of 1.5m-1 or less will pass the test after the first acceleration. However, if the test is not passed on the first acceleration a
further two accelerations will be carried out.

The average of the three acceleration readings will be calculated and if the reading is at or below 2.5m-1 for non-turbocharged engines or 3.0m-1 for turbocharged engines, the vehicle will pass this element of the test.
