EGR valve sounds like a Duck!!

The old car is going gud now.. but having disconnected the vaccume pipe from the EGR valve.. when the engines running (but you can't hear it as much) and when you stop it for a few seconds after.. the valve sounds like a duck! It must be bouncing on the seat.... will have to blank it off... anyone else experianced this??

sorry...... are you saying you haven't plugged up the disconnected vacuum pipe that once operated the EGR???

Posted this on your other fred B4 I got to this one!

Are U sure the quacking is coming from the valve??
Some others have experienced a parping, thrumming or duck noise after either just disconnecting the EGR or after fitting the bypass (no valve).
Ours has the bypass and sometimes we can faintly hear Donald under the bonet after the engine is switched off.
I favour the notion that it is something to do with the vacuum modulator valve that drives the EGR (other end of the blanked off pipe)??
Does not happen (not noticable) all the time so I tend to ignore it - could have been there all along but we were not listening for it??
Fink Willo and some others in the know had some thoughts on its origins when the EGR fred was in full swing.
Maybe Ming could get Porkey to have a look for us, sound like a right teknicle one.

Yes Donald duck is under my bonnet as well :). Does'nt happen all the time and no reason for it either. The EGR has a blanking kit on it and the vacuum pipe has a screw in it and is sealed with sealant, yet every now and then it sounds like a duck is slowly dieing under the bonnet when the engine is turned off. Nothing seems to be affected by this so I now ignore it :rolleyes:
 
That's the one... Not sure if it happens all the time... just noticed it... not really sure if it's there when running... will need to do some more investigation and report back... Some times will and sometimes won't when you stop and re-start the engine then turn it off again... but so far has happened every time I've initialy turned her off and put my head out to see if it's doing it? as you say... it's like a duck's last breath... lasts about 3 sec's and slowley goes as I assume the pressure drops... either in the exhaust or vaccume pipe?... will see what we can hear tomoro... interesting what??:5bblush5:
 
Just a fort?
When the engine is not running there's no pressure in the exhaust - one end open to the ozone layer and nufink being pushed in from engine.
When the engine is not running there is no pressure in the turbo pipes - relies on turbo rotation to pressurise the tubes and leaks back almost instantly when turbo stops rotating (driven by exhaust pressure).
Only system with any residual energy (lack of air) is the vacum system, stored in the brake servo etc. - where that leaks off to over time is anyones guess - bet that is where Donald's hiding tho'?

But when you switch off,, the turbo's still doing 5ooooo rpm or so (may be not that much then)... this will spin for a while after the exhaust gas has stopped coming out... could it be this pressure we are hearing??
 
I agree it can be embarrassing when Donald appears when people are around. I have had some funny looks.

Donald only appeared in my engine compartment as soon as I unplugged the vac pipe for the EGR valve and put a screw in it. It didn't really make a noise when no screw in it. I investigated where the noise was coming from one day as it had been driving me mad for a few days and deffo sounds like the vac pipe. The EGR uses the vacuum supplied to open the valve and recirculate the exhaust gas at low revs. In its own way saving the planet by killing the engine.

If anyone knows how to get rid of Donald the dying duck please let us all know.

But why would the turbo still be spinning so fast when we all allow it to wind down by idling for a couple of minutes before switching off..........................................................................or do we.
 
Yes indeed.. it sit's ticking over for a good well may be 30 seconds before being switched off (should be longer I know.. but dinners on the table)... but even at tickover.. it will be spinning quite fast I would have thought??
 
You need to put the pipe back on the egr valve and then disconnect and plug the vacuum pipe the other side of the modulator valve. The noise will then disappear.

Ok reconnect the pipe to the EGR valve. Now follow that pipe down under the inlet manifold. You should feel it come to a box like object. This is the EGR solenoid valve. Going into this as well as the pipe from the EGR is another one. Pull off this pipe and plug it. You have to plug it because the vacuum is fed to other components as well.

Doesn't that other pipe operate the variable vanes on the turbo?
 
Willo... you Donald is much bigger than my Donald!... very impressive!!... Will have to get mine into training as it's beeten into 2nd place by that!!!:D:D:D:D

I was lucky in such way that I could lay my hands on an old worldchampionship contestant. Looks however I forgot to feed it as don't hear it anymore the last couple of months.....:):):)
