Unwinding noise.

Hi all,

Don't know whether this been requested already overhere or not but I asked it alrfeady somewhere else, that I'm sure of. So here my question, when I shut down the engine (Td4 MY01) it happens, not all the time but maybe 30 to 40 % of the time. I thought about it again as it happened again today, I arrived home and when getting out of the car I could hear that unwinding noise again, it's like a springloaded 'thing' that unwinds with a ticking noise, not loud, for about 4-5 seconds, incidentally my neighbour with his 'newer' Td4 Sport (MY05) arrived at my place few mins. later and when he shut down his engine I could hear the same noise. It's hard to describe but as I could hear it also with my neighbourg's engine I guess this must be a common thing amongst Td4's ?? Anyone any idea what it could be ? It's not a ticking noise of metal cooling down, also not the fan of the ECU, I have the impression the noise comes from beneath the EGR valve housing or so. Thanks in advance and all the best.

something? resetting for use on startup? - i am think of summat like (but obviously not) a choke mechanism that resets on cooling down ready for next start if yu see wot i mean?

If it would be something like that it should happen each time I shut down the engine, no ?? As said it doesn't happen all the time, only every now and then, but it struck my attention again as the same I heard with my neighbour's engine (engine 4 years younger), so if it was something bad or dangerous I think they would have cured it in the meantime but as the same could still be heard in my neighbour's engine (I repeat myself, I know) I suppose they know about but that it doesn't harm. But it still leaves me curious.

As the engine is a BMW I doubt very much any spitfire parts will be used in it ?????

Erm ! No can do pics anymore for a while, My younger brother has got my camera, well Our camera, well to be honist it His camera,i just borrowed it and erm kept it for 6 months

Well thats wot famlies are for Innit???

Don't think so, it's a really ticking noise at a not too slow speed which is already there BEFORE I shut the engine down, the turbo is supposed to run much faster and smoother. It is as something mechanical is unwinding as I said. It is about 5 secs. or so it does it, not very loud but very noticable when you halt your engine in a garage or so where there's no outside noise, and if you listen to it before the engine is halted it is there already, but as said not always, only in 30-40% of the time. If it was indeed the turbo the noise would be there ALL the time I guess, as I heard it also for the first time at my neighbour's car I guess he also has got it only every now and then. Most probably all Td4's do have it but it's not that loud to attract attention of people I think.

OIL COOLER makes a metalic clickin noise as it cools ,lift yer bonnet after a long run, and put your hand on the metal near it and you can feel it. . .

No, it's not the ticking noise of metal parts cooling down, thought today whether it's possible it has something to do with the high pressure pump ? But think it can't as the noise not always there. I have the impression it comes from down of the engineblock on the RH side, noise seems to come upwards from between the engine block and the inside fender underneath the batteryhousing, more from the engine (left) side. No-one else heard this before ?? Or also ???

No, not coming from there, besides still too warm to have the FBH started.

Beats me, it's a rapid ticking noise, that's the best I can explain it? it sounds as something is running down to a halt giving that noise, but question is WHAT?? As it's not even half of the time it happens it can't be one of the most obvious things on the engine as these do work all the time the engine runs, so why is this one happening so rare and is only my car and my neighbour's one having this as apparently no-one else in the UK so far noticed it ?? Mystery, mystery, mystery. That's why I was hoping clutchdust could shed some light on this as he must certainly have had/heard this as well already ??

Believe it or not but every time I arrive home I first put the car in the garage, open the hood, start my camera to take a video and put it in the enginebay, then I stop the engine, all this in the hope to catch this unwinding or spinning down noise. Up till now two times I had not my camera with me and two times 'IT' was there, all the other times I'm ready for it just zipp. Think this bl..... thing is playing around with the good man's glockenspiel. But no despare, I keep trying to catch it.

just had a thought - its not the air con compressor slowing down is it?
