So what's withe the difference in the egr valve kits?

There is some on eBay for £5 and others for £50! Do they do the same job? Some come with a cone like thing that mounts to the engine. And another is just a blanking plate.

My TD5 is pumping out some serious black smoke when I accelerate and so I'm going to do the upgrade so want to know which one to buy!

I fitted the one from td5alive to my d2 did the job, never any problems.
The cone bit actually replaces the egr valve itself on the front of the inlet manifold.
The little blanking plate goes on the front of the exhaust manifold.

There are blanking kits and removal kits.

You can plate of the valve so that it still exists but just doesn't work, or you can get new pipe work and remove the whole system.

On a 300tdi for example you can remove the whole lot with the £5 plate and by welding up the hole on the inlet pipe, or you can buy a new piece of pipe.

At the end of the day the most basic version - the plate - does the same as the full removal kits.

If you plate it now you can always get the other bits in the future or make your own/modify pipe work.

TD5 Newby, Just out of curiosity could you tell me why the EGR is on the Landy in the first place? It just seems a bit odd to me that engineers have gone through great lengths to get them on there in the first place only for Landy owners to take them off again. Does it not affect the emission or was it just a pointless excercise by Land Rover?

an american idea i believe i first saw it on early rrc except that was a bit more simpler ,the idea is to clean some off the emissions by reburning some ,the problems arise as inlet manifld cokes up as hot exhaust gas bakes oil vapour from turbo and if vavle leaks or stays open reduces turbo boost and makes engine run badly

James before that, i think on the series motors called detox or something like that for the USA market.
Little pipes from the top of each exhaust port then back to the inlet side, but pipes were so small i cant see they did much probably more of a, its got to have them so we will fit them.

Ah an American idea, it all makes perfect sense now...so off it comes on my Landy TD5...this should hopefully make it go up hills better! :)

EGR systems work by reducing combustion temperatures and thus reducing Oxides of Nitrogen exhausted to the air. They work by replacing good clean Oxygen with dirty ****y exhaust gasses which stifle combustion. Engineers are the first to admit that it hurts performance but their first priority is to meet ever increasing emmision standards in a whole range of operating conditions and with variable fuel standards. The reality is that a properly tuned diesel running at optimum combustion will produce less dangerous particulates and NOXs than an average engine set up for all scenarios.
