EGR Blanking

All done!
started getting dark near the end though (i got interrupted), all went pretty smoothly except the bottom bolt on the exhaust manifold wouldn't budge. the top one came out just fine. in the end i reinstalled the bolt, and put the blanking plate between the cooler and pipe (I also blanked the other end too)

I brought an EGR kit with a nipple for a boost gauge, so for now thats been blocked off with some silicone pipe that's been kinked with a cable tie until i find a nice boost gauge.

I was very surprised to see just how clean the system was!

the inlet manifold was nice too, not crusty at all.
the engine seems to run nice too, possibly more power before the turbo kicks in but this could be a placebo!

thanks all for your help,
Callum

Good job,

Just keep soaking the bolt overnight, then try to remove when engine is hot, it will come out.
My one was like that, not as dirty as others i have seen.
Diesels need two things clean fresh air, and clean fuel, then they are very happy.

I fitted a max flow K&N air filter, when i did my one, just to complete the job so to speak.

Also been using this, got better performance and MPG progressively over the last 5-6 years, don't think it will get any better now the injectors are clean.
Got my MOT last week, tester said the emissions reading was lowest he had ever seen for a defender, and way down from last year, showed him the bottle he grinned and said 'good stuff i use that in my new Passatt CC!

Mine also had reduced emmisions after the EGR was blanked without any additives... i'm sure knowing how it works that the EGR is good for the environment ONLY if it works 100% as it was conceived to which is not the case on a more than 10 years old vehicle....IMO getting rid of an old EGR system is a win-win situation.

Agree, I used the additive to clean the injectors firstly. Also increased the cetane value so I don't have to buy expensive diesel etc.

i was looking for some additive to clean the injector etc.
i'll give this one a go,

i think my EGR was working spot on to be honest, I attached some hose to the actuator everything freely moves by sucking on the pipe. Kind of a shame really, I won't get to see the big gains! at least it wasn't stuck open with all that soot going into the engine.

High flow Air filter combined with EGR delete should produce a noticeable difference.

I always wipe the nozzle of the diesel pump at the garage, before I fill up, you would be surprised how much crud from other peoples cars etc can get into your tank.

I have used millers diesel max on my VW caddy (131K) & Passat and the mrs Galaxy (158K), been using it for around 5 years now. Very happy with the results. Instructions say to use a double dose first time, I keep it in the boot.

By the way, it absolutely stinks if you spill it, and you wont get rid of the smell for ages.
I keep it in a HD zip seal sandwich bag / food bag in the boot .

Would recommend buying from Opie oil website or they have shop on ebay, expect to pay no more than around £12 inc del.
One bottle will do you for around 9 full tanks

as you can see from the profile pic i've got a snorkel with an air ram head so maybe that will make a difference? i haven't checked the filter, i'll do that this weekend!

i'll get some of that diesel max on order i reckon

callum

Might do, but unless its all air tight and sealed its very doubtful!

My view here is they look good, but unless you plan on going submarine or wading through deep water and can be arsed to fit breathers to everything and bung up holes, and disconnect your fan every time you go deep, I would not bother with it unless you like the look of it if so I would just disconnect under bonnet and go back to standard air box with hi flow filter. Standard wading depth without all that faffing is half a meter (underside of top of front tyre) which should be plenty!

I removed my one but thats the thing about defenders.... its up to yo....... do it the way YOU want.

When it comes to the aesthetics of your vehicle everyone will have a different view and rightly, so the trick is take it all in and decide for yourself etc!

If it was up to me i probably wouldn't have fitted one but since its got one i quite like it. even if i didn't i might keep it for people's reactions "WHAAAT!!?? its even got a snorkel!!" haha

i am in two minds to pop one like yours on my one just for show, my one had the mantec round one i did not like it.

Consider these for the other side, for your heater intake. Standard design is poor as it just fills with rain, when stationary, so iver night you get a massive puddle of water in heater air intake ( drains are always blocked then you suck up water into fan and no more fan / heater)
I have the snow scoop cowl fitted. BIG difference when it snows etc.
The other ones stop it filling with rain until you start driving of course!
Snow cowl is on the left!

PS dont be tempted to fit one on drivers wing, it will just encourage water to go into the back of wing, factory fit is a blanking plate!

Agree,

great environmental concept, but in practice they rarely perform properly and no sustainable outcome actually end up making us use more fuel! some what oxymoronic if you ask me!

hang on so he only real winner really are the oil companies hmmmmm !

be very careful using injector cleaners some can be very corrosive if left in the system to long for example if you fill your car every 2 to 3 weeks ..best time to use is when going for a long drive knowing your going to use most of the fuel in the tank .....then you add 2 stroke oil into the fuel this helps lubrication on some very high tolerance components .... do a google search on 2 stroke added to diesel

ever notice some land rovers or other vehicles there snorkel head is pointing to the rear i have mine pointing to the rear also... reason being fuel consumption and there is no difference in power if it faces forward ..when i first installed my snorkel to my d2 i noticed fuel consumption power never changed but long drives i noticed my fuel bill

ramming in to much air the turbo might not like this specially if the turbo isnt on boost or low boost situations let alone changing the the frequencies of the air flow
ie longer pipe work (intake tuning )
