Egr Blanking Mod

Hoses look a treat, don't forget to keep them tight as the standard clips don't compress silicon hoses like rubber. I find that the Synergy with the in cab switch and new MAF has not really improved my MPG but the performance is greatly improved.

Where would I bring the cable from the synergy unit into the cab on a TD4 manual?
Can't see anywhere obvious.

Follow the bonnet release cable mate.

Wow, what a difference !! Throttle response is much better, pick-up from standstill is greatly improved & no more exhaust smoke when hitting full throttle. Fuel economy is also improved. Not surprising considering the amount of crud in my EGR valve.

I went for the Britpart DA1087FL unit, as it came with silicon hoses - my OE rubber ones were soft from oil & crud.

What does the blanking plate actually consist of? Is it just a plate with 4 holes drilled for the bolts and a piece of pipe welded to it for the boost hoses to mount onto?

Thanks nickcc, the Britpart kit comes with new jubilee clips, so managed to get them tight

Mick, this is what the bypass looks like;

Land Rover Accessories | EGR bypass tube | Freelander 1 - Td4 - Britpart - The Quality Parts for Land Rovers

Basically, it's a straight through pipe that replaces the complete EGR valve unit. The 'stalk' bit goes to the back when fitted to blank off the pipe which pushes exhaust gas back into the air inlet via the valve - which is why you can't see it in the fitted photos

Thanks for that mate. So the pipe the boost hose goes on isn't blanked, just the small "stalk" looking one for the exhaust gasses? I might have a go at making one.

Spot on mate. I think a few guys on the forum have done this themselves - I don't have the skills or equipment

I will see what I can get from work tomorrow and have a go if I can get the bits. It shouldn't be too hard but I need to finish my roof rack before starting another project, I already have a half built trailer chassis Stood up in there!

My brother in law (who is a welder by trade) and I used to build the occasional small trailer in his garage as a side-line. Very nice they were too.

We've had to give up completely due to the new trailer regs that came in last October.

Have you any thoughts or ideas as to how to pass / or avoid the vehicle type approval needed?

I haven't really had any problems to be honest, but I don't build them for fun/money, I build them to fit a purpose.

I rebuilt one I was left when my grandfather passed away a couple of years ago. It's an 8 x 4 box on leaf springs, the axel has brakes but its not set up. It needs some decent mud flaps, but it conforms to all the other trailer regs, lights, reflectors etc. the police don't want to know when I'm towing it round, been past many a traffic officer, both on the motorways and round the towns.

The one in the garage being built at the minute is solely for my homemade go cart. It will also conform to all the trailer regs, so hopefully I will be alright with that one aswel.

What regs stopped yous?

The Type Approval regs.

Since 28th October 2012 all new trilers need type approval.

The idea is to stop the cowboys building unsafe cr*p.

So this applies to any small scale builder - or anyone at all building their own - as there are no exemptions.

We are slowly being brought into line with the rest of the world, where all trailer need to be plated and have the gross weight and production date etc.

AFAIK we are eventually going to have trailer registration too.

Caravan theft has a lot do do with it as well.

However you can 'refurbish' an 'old' trailer without any hassle.

So it's going to be like Triggers brush - 20 new handles and 15 new heads - but it's still the same brush!

It does state that "any special purpose" trailer isn't covered under these laws, so I'm classing my cart trailer as "special purpose" trailer.

I'm guessing here, but I believe that covers all new out and out off road/expedition trailers aswel.

Ah!- We thought that too.

No problem in calling it a special purpose 'one off' trailer, but the next snag is that there are more new regs stating that 'special purpose' trailers will come under the annual testing scheme at a DVLA testing station as of October 2014. This is the Bus and HGV type testing station - not your local MOT garage test.

Trailer manufacturers have already been contacted by the VOSA/DVLA to ensure that the plates on their trailers have all the EU info needed.

Traffic Police are getting instructions to check on any 'non-proprietry' trailers.

I reckon the days of DIY trailers are past.

Got the EGR blank in the post this morning, bought the black one off ebay. Just wondering if I need to get a gasket as one wasn't supplied with the blank.

Dazjam, is kindly sending me the piece of pipe and the peg for the vacuum hose, so many thanks to Daz for that.

I just put a bolt in the vacuum pipe and a small jubilee clip round it! Don't forget to tie wrap it out the way, there is a rubber gasket where the egr bolts on the intake

Thanks for the reply. I have read all 48 pages of this thread but couldn't see anything about the gasket, so I assume the rubber gasket is already there then.

Again with the vacuum pipe reading a lot about the duck, has driven me quackers LOL, so while I'm at it I'll do it all in one go.
