Egr Blanking Mod

Hi have just done EGR blanking/replacement mod......wow what a difference...the old one was completely carbuncled ..... and no longer functioned anyway...... The engine is so much more responsive at light throttle openings.....and there also seems to be a useful degree of torque. Out right performance is a little better.....on the whole an excellent mod....the car generally feels smoother and a little more 'frisky'. Thanks for all the advice.....I have saved the unclogging of the plastic inlet tracts for the summer.....

Newbie member would like to thank all for 25 pages of advice on the EGR mod. Got one from fleabay, fitted it this morning, EGR was stinking, will clean that off and keep for "just in case". I blocked off the vacuum pipe with a wood screw and then drove about 20 miles. I think the 05 Freelander is responding better than before, however there is a noticeable difference with the sound from the turbo, not the quack that others have experienced but a definite whistle-i suppose if i was a 17 year old i would be pretty chuffed but i'm concerned that i will cause damage to the turbo. In the morning i will crimp the pipe nearer to its origin to see if that will make a difference. Any advice would be appreciate.
Thanks.

mwap5194 PM dazjam for a kit to finish the job.
It works - no chance of damage if you block both ends of the vac pipe to stop foreign objects - squirrels Or ducks getting up the vac pipes.
All credit to the Ming - ruler of Zog - damn fine mod.
And missus Ming for keepin' the tratter boys in check.

Hi all

just bought the sureflow egr bypass and before I fit it i'm going to take inlet manifold off and Mr muscle it till clean and anything else that needs cleaning. Just one question though, after carrying out this task and get it all put back together would'nt it be wise to put in engine and deisel flush as this gets rid of any other carbon deposits etc so I am led to beleive. As I am off to scotland next friday I was thinking about putting it in then before filling up as the hotter the engine the better. Heard Millers eco max is good but would appreciate if anyone could let me know which one is better. Also will I need any gaskets for when I replace inlet manifold as I've heard that original gasket is reusable but would it be a safe bet to buy new ones just incase.

cheers

macca

Decided to fit new egr bypass today, cleaned inlet manifold with mr muscle twice but never got near as much gunk out as I would of liked, so if anyone has any info on how to get manifold really clean i would really appreciate it as i'm planning on doing it again in the summer. As everyone else has stated on this forum my egr valve and manifold was absolutely caked in thick black oily paste which can't be good for the engine. Put the new sureflow bypass on and will give it a run out tomorrow. Also got bottle of X1R deisel system treatment but gonna add it to tank next week before I set off for a weekend in scotland pike fishing. will report back as to if engine running any differently. Watch this space eh!!!!!!

I used brake/carb cleaner spray to get most of the oil/carbon out of the air intake before refitting, cellulose thinners would also shift as long as you kept it off the paintwork. I also changed the intercooler hoses at the same time as they were swollen and spongy due to the excess of oil. Another tip would be to always use latex type gloves when cleaning the EGR and intake pipework as it takes longer to clean the oil/carbon off your hands than it took to change the EGR valve (reminds me of the days when I used to overhaul gardner engines).

Cheers for tips nick, will try in the summer, know what you mean about wearing gloves mate, can imagine it would take a while to get all that black gunk out your skin.

having read all thru this thread and having had the egr and inlet manifold off today (to change the glowplugs) I cleaned all the gunk out of the egr valve, refitted it and then blanked of the vacuum pipe at the t section mentioned earlier with Dazjam's peg n pipe kit (thanks mate ;) ) car is deffo perkier below 3k and seems to be running smoother :)

so, based on the fact that blanking of the vacuum pipe to the egr valve effectively disables it (no exhaust gases entering the system as there is no vacuum to pull the plunger up) I cannot see the point in spending between 30 and 50 quid on a blanking mod! Admittedly the airflow through the dummy egr might be improved but hey, we're talking a 2.0 diesel here not a v10 f1 motor, so before you go spending your money just think it through..... ;)

Same here with the cheap peg & pipe mod as vehicle is urban use most of the time anyway :)

Don't sound like it should make any difference by improving the airflow but it does.
Even helps get the MPG up a tad.
If youre a 'green' then don't do it as you will be increasing the output of the NO4 with or without the bypass.
Converted sceptic! :):)

The "increased" output of NO4 is compensated by the improved MPG figures....;)

Has anyone got a ****ed, old, or no longer needed EGR valve they could send me please? I will cover the postage, or if someone lives in or around the catterick area, or Durham, bishop Auckland area, I could pick it up.
Please let me know.
Also over the last couple of pages the vacuum pipe being blanked off, instead of the whole EGR valve blank, has been mentioned, how effective is that? Does it do exactly the same as the EGR blank, Or is it better to go the whole hog and do it properly?

Well I'm on my third tank since doing just the vac pipe blanking mod (and cleaned up egr valve) runs smoother, perkier at lower revs and mpg up so I think I'll keep my 50 quid for a dummy egr kit in my pocket, can't see the point of buying one!

How and where have you blanked yours off? Did you just cable tie a screw in it?

dazjam kindly sent me a peg n piipe kit :)

drop him a pm and if he's got any left he will send you one FOC!! (I dropped a fiver in the air ambulance box on his behalf) then blank it off at the t junction :)

Nice 1 mate. I will drop him a PM if this "cowboy job" I'm doing doesn't work (I'm blanking it off with a screw, cabletiying it in, then up out the way).
I will report back in a week or so to let yous know how I get on!
Cheers for the help mate!
Much appreciated!

See page 20 of this thread , The pipe & peg is so easy, cheap and neat to do :)

I'm on my phone mate, it only goes up to page 13?? That's this page we on now, so I wonder if this app has twice the number of posts per page??
I will try and have a look see what I can find, but as it stands, I have disconnected the rubber pipe from the EGR, blanked the end with a screw, and blanked the EGR with a folded piece of fish tank air hose.
Sound about right????
