EGR blank/removal

The EGR system on diesels allows exhaust gas in only at certain times in the driving cycle mostly part throttle cruising. It does two things, one is to reduce the amount of unburnt oxygen in the cylinder, the other is to lower the in cylinder combustion temperature! If there's a excess of oxygen in the cylinder at a high temperature (typically cruising) it combines with the nitrogen that's present making oxides of nitrogen (NOX gases) these are what cause acid rain! So lower the temp remove some oxygen, problem solved? The problem is that the valve has to work in such a ****ty hot environment, it fails, usually sticking open, this means when you put your foot down there isn't enough oxygen in the cylinder to burn the fuel injected, hence black smoke poor performance and economy! Blank it off it removes the problem. But you kill the forests in Norway or where ever! Then you move on to the tuning benefits, which are greater on some models than others as discussed!
Hope this makes it clearer why it's there and how it works, and what goes wrong, plus the symptoms.
9 times out of 10 it's cheaper and easier to blank off or remove than it is to fix! Just don't tell the green lobby:)
If you want to know more, I'll try to answer as best I can but that's pretty much it! W

just checked mine that I removed yesterday, actually seems jammed shut! Your explanation fits very well with the engine becoming smoother at part throttle, my engine used to "hunt" slightly, it's now pretty smooth.....much better

They stick in any position. Quite often it can change day to day. Stuck shut to stuck fully open or anywhere in between!

If its that noticeable I'd suspect your EGR was faulty:) does it smoke any less?

I'd imagine that it was faulty yes... And yea it doesn't smoke much when I give it some stick now which is disappointing as it satisfied me greatly covering inconsiderate cyclists and taxi drivers in and around london!

Wind your pump up too much it'll smoke like a **** and disappear like fook;)

done the egr valves (removed them completely) on our 300tdi disco and cousins td5 disco, cant say i have noticed too much difference in ours with the egr but when we removed the dpf, ERR! sorry the catt that did make quite a difference, much smoother, the td5 on the other hand runs smoother and has improved on performance, the inlet manifold was clogged as was the oil cooler so obviously this also made a difference but as reguards economy we will just have to wait and see ,,

I blanked off my EGR valve, cleaned my intercooler and intake manifold plus cat and centre silencer removed all at the same time on my 300tdi made a huge difference!!!
Worth doing now pulls itself up all but the steepest hills without the need to change down

EGR blank is on my to do list for the 300 once I have replaced the sills. I have an exhaust gas temperature probe to fit in to the banking plate so I can keep an eye on the temps when I tweak the pump.

Rather than use a simple gauge for the EGT probe I have a PID temperature controller which I can set up with a alarm output to warn when the temp gets a bit high and a second output which I plan to use to limit the fueling if things get realy hot.

I'm also keeping an eye on eBay for a cheap front mounted intercooler.

I realy have to stop getting any more ideas until bat least have it on the road.

I've just bought the blanking kit today and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I've soaked the bolts in anti-seize penetrative spray so I'm hoping they come out without too much of a problem when I do the job on Thursday. Fingers' crossed.

EGR blanking kit fitted today (typing this with oily fingernails!). I was dreading the bolts, but they came off really easily with allen key. Going on a decent run tomorrow, so I may get some idea of improvements.

Well mines been fitted for a week now and there is most definately
a noticeable difference especially when going up hills she seems to
pull alot better, as for fuel economy I cant comment on as yet, but
all in all I am pleased with the mod and for £18 it can't be bad

Just removed and blanked off my EGR valve, so should I
expect a varst improvement in performance?

hey.....mine doesnt have one of them!!!!!,don't mean s**t in uk,i work in a mot garage,EU rules don't work here(well we don't except them)smoke test on diesel's!!!!!we don't even bother,if the custemer wants a print out we give them one........;)
