Educate me please.......diffs/tranfer boxes etc

Im new to the landy scene and picking up little bits and peices here and there, I have a couple of questions if one of you rivet counters could spend a moment to explain :)

1: I heard on old series landrovers they are rear wheel drive until you engage 4wd, where on a Disco its permenant 4wd, question is, it is possible to make my Disco rwd only with selectable 4wd by using some parts from older LR's ? , or any easy way to at least make my Disco more rear bias on slipperly stuff ( I hate understeer sorry :D )

2: Is there a guide anywhere on how to trim 5 door Disco shells to allow larger wheels, im unsure atm how large I can go on mine, its got a 4in lift kit on it atm, unsure atm what size tyres but not mahoosive ones, in the future im looking at some bigger tyres and some flexi arches

3: How much stick will a discovery take ?? im refering to how much will it take before you start breaking things if you were to up the speed a little on really rough terrain, what bits should be strengthend for example if I was for example gonna catch some air on small jumps etc ? Can anyone reccomend a suspension mod/kit suitable for this kind of thing, reason I ask is that I quite like the idea in the future of maybe doing some Safari type events with the truck, vids ive seen show the likes of the Bowlers etc getting air without breaking into a million peices :D

If its a Series II Disco without Diff Lock then it won't go in rear wheel drive, however if the Disco has Diff lock remove the front prop shaft, engage the diff lock and you will have a rear whee drive vehicle, why anyone (apart from Mondo) would wanna run round in two wheel drive is beyond me (but Mondo is slowly evolving, he only just learned to peel bananas recently)
 
Mine is a series 1 TDi200

I do not want to run around in RWD all the time, but it would be nice if I could run RWD with selectable 4wd when needed, this appears to be impression I get about older LR's ?

firstly, yer always gonna get understeer due the fact its not desinged to corner, big heavy engine over the front axle, and untill you up yer power yer not gonna get anywhere near to oversteer, you might touch 4 wheel drift at speed in the wet but even then youll be lucky.

With a 4" lift you should have to modify it, maybe just the tiniest skim on the arches. i mate of mine as 4" of lift and 37" tyres with no further mods.

as for giving it stick, proper maintanence and keeping an eye on things will prevent breakages but if yer gonna treat it like that then work harder and get a bowler :rolleyes:

Nah... you're gonna have to do better than that mate... WHY do you want selectable 2WD?

It isn't going to save you any fuel ya know... it's still the same gearbox, the same transfer box, the same ratio rear diff, same weight car, the same power output of the engine, same final drive ratio and the same aerodynamics (ok... lack of aerodynamics perhaps).

It's not going to make it any nicer to drive and it certainly won't make it any faster either.

If anything, it'll be slower, less economical and heavier as you'll have to add some mechanism to be able to select 4WD instead of 2WD.

Hey! I've got an idea! Give me the disco and buy a Nissan Navarra... they're 2WD (RWD) with selectable 4WD like an old series.

Firstly this is my TOY for playing in the mud and crap etc

I was wondering if I could force a more neutral balance in the handling on the slippery stuff with the 2wd , and select 4wd when I really needed it.

Im not after fast with a 200 TDi eh ;)

Take a look at my truck and you will see what I mean !

Its nothing pretentious and purely for fun - whilst still road legal.

Thanks for the comments thus far, seems quite apparant I should just run it like it was intended for now until I can afford something a little more custom and serious :)

Yep... thas another good'un.

Hey hey! I've found a better way to make it less understeery! Fit 285/60/16 front tyres and some worn out Marshal 205/80/16 rears and only drive it when it's been snowing. It'll oversteer like a bastard then! ;)
 
Nice paint job... professional job woz it ? :D

Definitely leave it as it is mate... looks like you'll be using it off the road a lot more than on it and a 2wd off roader with 4 wheels is a liability not an asset ;)
 
well I kinda like the sound of scrapin branches and stuff, camo much less maintainance to keep looking ****, so to speak :D

Also means I dont have to try and make it look something it aint, which is basicaly a rufty tufty offroad fun machine :D
 
My Isuzu has permanent 2 wheel drive with selectable 4 wheel drive in high or 4 wheel drive low but it's not a land rover:D
 
Its missing the winch from the front end atm, will be putting a new one in ( maybe ) and getting a front steering guard fitted sometime very soon.

Yes, does look a little ghay without the winch in that space :D
 
looks like its fairly modded as it is.What size wheels you got on now?Have you read red guide to tyre sizes on a disco?I wouldnt mess about with 2-4wd more trouble than its worth.And as for getting "air".......well i think itd be easier to get mud.
 
Not sure on the tyre sizes atm, pretty sure the rims are 16's, have looked on that sticky thread already, but it doesn't advise for trucks with lift kits ?

Will check tomorrow when I clean the chassis up from the last outing :)
