I have a 1994 300tdi defender 90 with the r380 gearbox etc. if I wanted a rear PTO so as to power towed farm equipment, what would I need to make a PTO at the rear of my landy?

Is there some bolt on thing that would come off the gearbox side of the transfer box (I.e. so I could power the PTO with the tx box in neutral or visa versa)?

Everything I can find on the Internet seems to be geared towards a PTO powered winch on the front, or an hydrolic alternative driven off the engine where the aircon pump would be.

Thanks James.

So that's where that round cover thing is right?

Is it an easy install? I mean, if I get one of those and take off that cover, does it just bolt up to whatever is behind that cover?

easy ,just remove plate and bolt on ,oil pick up is the tube just ensure its open side up pto obviously needs gear box to be in gear ,but transfer box can be in or out of neutral

Brilliant. So then I just need to rig up some kind of propshaft arrangement to the back.

So next question, where can I get one? Does anyone sell them, or is it just a case of keeping an eye on the forums and eBay etc?

Well, I have a need quite soon to use various farming type implements that usually would be attached to a tractor. Trouble is, I don't have a tractor, and they seem like quite an expense option to buy one in workable condition and I'd need somewhere to store it. I do however have the landy, which if it could be used in place of said tractor, might enable me to hire the implements I need and do the work myself, rather than pay contractors to do the work for me (I actually really can't afford to pay anyone to do the work for me, so doing it myself somehow is the only option).

I thought that if the PTO was disengaged, it wouldn't make any noise. Is that not true? Or are they just noisy when in use?

Buy a scraper tractor with pto. Mate has one rigged up to pto splitter and log cutter.

Fyi tractor pto is different fitment to landrover take off. I would look at what equipment you have and then what "can " run it. Defender pto are not cheap and if your transfer is worn at all can struggle under big effort.

Most tree surgeons for instance either buy utility landys with hydraulic pto already fitted or a small scrapper tractor when moving around isn't an issue

wouldnt make a noise when disengaged ,its just a collar that is pushed over splines on rear of input gear .presumably small old gear that would normally be run at 540 rpm, they are rare with drive to the rear this is rear unit ,Landrover Defender rear PTO Power Take Off Superwinch rare 90 110 127 | eBay

What type of work needs to be done?

Ill be needing to install a bugger load of fencing to keep in horses, so I'll either need to bang the posts in with a post knocker or dig holes for them with one of them big auger drill things. Also, in the next few months I'll have a few acres of grass that will need turning to hay bails. Apparently this generally involves at least three machines to cut, turn and bail it. A tipper trailer would be useful too I'd imagine.

it does but its mostly secured on point linkage apart from bailer but that really requires dual clutch so forward motion can be held and pto still run to keep even feed in baler

no it doesnt first one secured to t/box ,that one has pto shaft poking out of rear

Oh bugger, penny has just dropped, you mean I need one of each. One is the gearbox end and the other the cross member end.

Sorry, I'm completely dense on the subject, hence the thread title.

This isnt looking like such a cheap option now. Those parts will set me back a grand by the looks of it, and that's if I can find all the parts I need. Didn't realise the take off is different to a tractor either.

Beyond what a defender with pto can do then

An auger post drill is operated off a hydraulic pto not a shaft pto. They are rare as hens teeth and expensive.

You would be better with a tractor. You can hire them with full set up for post bashing.

If you only need to do a small amount of hay or straw and you don't have the equipment yet, it would probably be easier to look at some older land driven mowers and hay rakes, and a baler with a donkey engine fitted. A mate of mine did all his mowing with an old finger bar mower behind his discovery.
