Ok what I have here is a problem.

Symptoms are.

The imobaliser will not turn off.
both two button fobs broadcast but it will not unlock the landy. Checked on a key programmer.
The system will not accept reprogramming the fobs.
The EAK coda works but has to be put in every time the door is locked

As this is an 300tdi auto with EDC their is no spider to bypass so that is not an option.

So the question is do I need a new ECU for the EDC.

My guess would be that you have a problem with the fob radio receiver in the car.If that doesn't function it can't tell the ECU to cancel the immobiliser or operate the remote central locking.

I was thinking that to.

It's the green control box on in the passengers footwell
As that has failed before and has been replaced.
The plot thickens

Your car has no separate RF receiver like P38's or DII's, as you say the signal goes straight into the alarm ecu. This will be where your problem is,it may be worth trying to recode the fobs to it via Testbook.(The security link twixt the Alarm ecu and EDC ecu also needs to be relearnt at the same time)
I would also be looking for water ingress and checking all the feeds and earths to the alarm ecu.

Same happened to me last weekend so could only start with the EKA code I bought and new EDC ECU of eBay ( make sure you get ECU and fob ) cost me £30 buy it now arrived yesterday 5 min job all working now ( sounds daft but make sure you get one for the car 300tdi , auto )

Well £40 for a EDC ECU 2 fobs and the EAK coda from the local beakers job done all working happily now.

I get this problem, fobs work when they please. when they fail, just leave it a while or maybe a day and randomly it all starts working again.

So EDC and ECU can just be replaced together and that will sort? (hopefully)

EDC stands for Electronic Diesel Control and this system is managed/controlled by the engine ECU.

EDC is not a component in itself it's a marketing name for the system of control.
