My list of jobs just keeps getting longer! I notice when I turn the ignition the ECU light (an orange exclamation mark) turns on for a split second then goes out. Is this normal?

I'm trying to solve the excessive use of petrol other than it being a V8.

So I tried unplugging the air flow meter assuming this would throw an error on the ECU and make the light come on just to make sure the ECU was doing it's job.

No joy, the light didn't come on and the engine ran! so I then tried unplugging the fuel rail pressure sensor and still no light so I tried one of the lambda sensors and still no light.

Am I right in thinking that at least one of these sensors being unplugged should make the light come on? Is there an easy test to see if the ECU is working properly?

Thanks,

Ian.
