head gaskets need replacing, anything i kneed to know, any tips or tricks to make things go smooth?

if anyone can give me a method/list of sequence to take things off

how long will it take me to do?

its a '96 4.0 se

on the earlier 3.9's (I've done several) which the 4.0 is based you can lift bonnet right up out the way and use empty oil can to protect bonnet/roof and tie it back.

you should be still able to remove inlet manifold without stripping off wiring and fuel lines and tie out the way.

plenty of jars/tins to label parts and masking tape and pen for connectors plugs or pipes that are not obvious
 
down load a copy of rave as this is very helpful bonnet does indeed fold over and it has latches to hold it there. In rave it says to disconnect steering joint so you can undo manifold but with careful socket extension selection there is no need. Also loads of zip lock bags and a marker pen to keep all bolts together i would allow about 6 hours to get both heads off if you are handy with the spanners maybe quicker. i would also buy a complete set of head bolts from the likes of rpi only about £35 i think and genuine gaskets maybe from the likes of rimmer bros if you are methodical it is not a hard job.
 
It looks like the head gasket needs 14 x bolts of ERR2943 they are approx 8cm in length and 6 x bolts of ERR2944 they are 11cm long.

I haven't found the thread yet but will let you know.

i did mine 3 months ago,i got all the parts i neede from v8 tuner,which was composite head gaskets,valley gasket 2 valley gasket end seals and a set of arp head studs all delivered the next day just a shame it took a week to get the heads skimmed,just take your time,and the main thing is to remember to put the pushrods back in the same order you removed them,get some cardboard right on front p and then put 8 holes in it starting from the front working backover then put the pushrods in the holes in the cardboard.then do the same for the drivers side;)

thanks for the offer!! i reckon i'll just have to go it alone and wade in both feet first!!. the only plus side i can think of is that i'll be able to check things are as they should be on the way back up the engine!!!

doing it over friday/sat/sun so will let you know how i go on!!

ive got down to the heads today, there are ports for the intake, should any of these intakes have coolant in them, is it likely to have spilled in during dismantalling if not what could be the cause.

just checking, not overly worried yet.

also any tips for removing the exhaust bolt at the bulkhead side bottom? its tight and i cant get to it!!

generally not too bad a job. getting all the top side off was a lot of fiddling and swearing tho!!
 
i would guess coolant entered when you disturbed the valley gasket. Those bolts require lots of swearing at to get to i used a 3/8 ratchet with wobble extension and uj joint and then swore at it but it is possible!
 
nice to know everyone else struggles and its not just me!!! i will attack it with a fresh head in morning, didnt start till 12 and got down to heads at 3.45 so i reckon i'm making good time so far considering its the first time on this engine and quite a long time since i did a head gasket at all!!
 
wifes uncle is a mechanic so he will be inspecting them, he's been overseeing the whole debacle and allows me 'sections' to take apart untill he checks then gives me the next bit. ive learnt from experience to do as he says, he is getting on these days so doesn't take on big jobs but i think he enjoys seeing me struggle a little bit!!! he has never done a range rover or so he says so i like to get third and fourth opinions just to be sure!!!
 
it allways best to get the heads skimmed gav as being alloy they warp very quick once they get hot as in your case head gasket gone. couldnlt tell you a price for it but must be under £50 for pair. ya wifes uncle should revify that. when we raced rovers in cortinas as capris we allways got head skimmed after head gasket gone just to be safe. tho it up to you it only a suggestion.
 
if your wife uncle is good then get the valves recut as well it will run so much better after. cant see why you will need to buy new heads unless they are cracked which is unlikely, skimm is all you need. the bloke who skimms well tell you if they knanckerd anyway.
 
too late i'm afraid, its already on the rebuild. didnt get to see your posts till just now. the heads have been inspected and are fine. it appears the overheat and gasket wasn't too bad and didn't cause too much damage.

but things are starting to go well. should be able to drain old oil and refil 2mora and start her up early afternoon. just got to get fuel intake section back on and the 6 million electrical connections!!

oh what fun and it's gonna rain !!!!
 
turns out the heads are not fine or its the block or its something else!!!

i got to strip it all again and start again!!

any ideas what it could be if not the heads or block. oviously the gaskets are new!
