Looking to install a headlight reminder buzzer, using an NC relay wired to the lights and ignition, but where could I easily earth this in and around the fuse box under the steering column?

Appreciate I could use the door switch as a switched ground, but the wiring route to make a neat job of that seems a bit complicated versus the above.

Cheers

Can't help much on where would be best to earth but interested in your proposed setup - would you care to sketch a quick plan of how you're going to wire it up, so I can potentially steal the idea?

Unless I am missing something, surely you can just create your own earth using anything which is metal and bolted to the body? I have used bolts attaching things to the bulkhead for earth points before and had no problems.

Thanks all - I need to remember it's a Defender I'm working with and generally be a bit less precious! Self tapper it is.

Hopefully the attached makes sense, this will sound the buzzer when the lights are on but the ignition is not. The ignition and light feed can be taken by wrapping a wire around the relevant blade fuses - crude, but it makes it a quick and easy install and will serve the purpose for me.

I still think a self tapper is a bit brutal even if you are not being precious (especially if it is the vehicle in you avatar). There are plenty of bolted fittings on the bulkhead that you can use to add an earth point without having to add extra holes to encourage rust.

Any bolt that bolts to the body. Undo the fusebox to bulkhead mounting screw, ring terminal on your wire and screw it down.

Nice idea. As my lights are so dim I don't think I'd notice if they were on in daylight, I'm gonna shamelessly nick this!

Thanks for the post :)

Thanks everyone for the replies - I used one of the bolts on the windscreen bracket to earth in the end. Easier and neater than a self tapper - threaded the wire through from the fuse box to the door then up the door seal. All works great.

Right now I seem to be only driving in the dark so not much of an issue, but when the better weather comes around this might come in useful - every other car I've had has had fully automatic lights so I've trained my brain not to think!

Buzzer and relay wired up and ready to go.

Earthed on the windscreen bracket bolt.

Wired into the fuses - cheap and nasty. The buzzer is tucked away in the space behind the dash to the right.
