Hi All
I am writing a buying guide on Range Rover Classic for Classic Cars magazine, and need your help please to find a suitable two-door for photography. Classic Cars' style for buying guides is to photograph one car, in a studio against a white background, so we need a good clean original-spec two-door in a bright colour that will photograph well and be a good representative of the marque.
Classic Cars will reimburse petrol expenses and will supply photos and copies of the mag when it's published; the owner needs to be able to take their car to any one of the three studios they use - one is at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, one is at Norwich and one is at Derby. Weekdays are best, though the Norwich and Derby studios might be able to do a Saturday if you can't manage a weekday. The shoot normally takes around 3-4 hours, a bit longer if the weather is grotty so a lot of cleaning is required! It needs to be done before Christmas, but the sooner the better really as the weather will only get worse!
If you have a suitable car and are up for it, or know someone who can do it, please contact me here.
Once we've got the photo car sorted out, I'll probably be back begging for advice on who are the best specialists, etc - thanks in advance for your help!
Malcolm McKay

These are very disappointing and juvenile responses to a serious post.
Are there any genuine early Range Rover enthusiasts on this forum, or am I wasting my time here?

I thought they were well thought out and serious queries. Well the 1st one was anyway :p

So how much do you know about RRC? After all you are about to write a guide about em.. Personally I'd have got in Touch with the RRC register or enthusiasts group.

Well, all I can say is that I've been putting similar posts on different marque forums for several years and I've never, ever, had a response like this before. Forum members have always been very welcoming and helpful, and have helped me to produce the best possible buying guide and line up one of the best cars for photography. Only a few weeks ago the guys on a Mercedes 500E forum commented on how pleased they were that someone writing a buying guide had taken the trouble to go on the forum and ask for help - I was the first to do so, they said, and all the previous buying guides had been full of errors.
I don't claim to be a world-leading expert on Range Rovers - if I was, I wouldn't need to ask for your help. I have written a Range Rover buying guide before, it was published in Classic & Sports Car February 2009 - maybe some of you have seen it. But time moves on, and I would like to update myself on the current situation - and where better to go than the forum for these cars?
I did contact the Range Rover Register - that was my first call. I was advised to post on the range-rover-2-two-door-forum to ask for volunteers. I did, but after more than a week my post has had 10 views (two of which were me) and no response. That's actually more views than the previous three posts and only one post in the last few months has had any response, so I don't think that forum is going to turn up a car for photography before Christmas.
I then posted on rangerovers.net, where I had a friendly reception but was advised to look for a more UK-based forum, as most people on that one are in USA. So I came to you...

If there's someone who can help, I'm sure they'll come forward, we're a helpful and friendly bunch in the main, but we do get our fair share of spammers & scammers, so maybe that explains the reaction.

And how much you are being paid for your efforts!

Obviously he gets paid, it's his living! How much do you get paid?

tldr; don't bother with classic cars magazine buyers guides. they are written by the clueless who trawl forums for help.

the huge multimillion global company bauer media must be in the crap if you only get your petrol and a copy of the mag.

or are they hiring non specialist independents to fill up the blank pages between the adverts?

ps, if you are spamming multiple forums then press enter every now and again. you'd think you'd know better.. y'know.. being a writer and knowing your medium and all that.

Think he missed that bit out in his first post, not really the same but the wife gives me pocket money, think its about £7 now that its just went up:)

Wow, what an appalling set of responses to a perfectly reasonable request. Approaches like this from publishers are quite common these days - I've seen plenty on other forums. Where better to find an unusual car for a photoshoot than on a user forum? And I struggle to see what the potential 'scam' could be.

To the OP - I also work in publishing and I understand entirely your reason for coming here looking for assistance. Please be assured that the comments posted are not representative of all owners of older Range Rovers and some of us aren't arrogant and insulting idiots.

Have you considered looking on Ebay for a seller with a mint one? I know there are a few on there now that look very nice! maybe worth a look?

Hope that helps you out abit... need a decent p38 for any of these shoots... ;)
